I've always wondered whether you should spit chewing gum out or is ot OK to swallow it ? Personally I hate the stuff but is it true that the stomache can't digest it or is it just an old wives tale ? If it is so bad for us why doesn't it have a health warning on it ? Clare.x

It's so chewy I don't know how people can swallow without doing a pelican impression.

I've been told that if you swallow it then it can stick in your appendix, with nasty results.

always thought it would stick to my throat if i swollowed it, but to chuck it i wrap it first as i remember seeing mum and dads dog blackie with it stuck in between the pads on his paws, dad had to cut it out of his fur , bless him, just cos someone never binned it

Old Wives Tales, it is completely harmless, you can not digest it so it is leaves your body in the normal way. It can not stay in your body or wrap itself around any of your organs. However I would just suggest wrapping it in paper and throwing it in the bin cos it's not overly pleasant swallowing it.

as children we were told not to swallow it,but I believe it has different ingredients now.Old habits die hard, I always keep the silver paper in my pocket and spit it (very ladylike of course) into that.

Stick it behind your collar or under the table like we older ones used to. Seriously, wouldn,t even consider swallowing it, although I have done it accidentally when younger, apparently without harm. Happy days

actually, I never minded mine chewing it, especially the sugar free variety after meals. They are aged 18to 34, and not one of them has ever had a filling or extractionso I assume gum chewing may have been beneficial.

I've always swallowed gum (not that I use it that often)....never had any ill effects! Your stomach acid is strong enough to dissolve it. Dee x
