My Gran made the best fruit cake EVER. 1/2 pound of everythign and 3 eggs. Mix well, put into lined and greased tin, make a well in the middle and sprinkle demarara sugar on it. Bake for an hour. It could have lasted weeks. How many others have inherited recipes from grandparents that we still use? What are they?

I have to add here that my Great Aunt Ivy also made lots of cakes, but her fruit cakes always sunk in the middle, no matter what she did. We always called them Polo cakes. They were still delicious, and more than made up for by her strawberry jam.

I think there should be a campaign to bring back all those old fashioned cakes. They were soooooooo much better that all these fancy one bite cakes you get today

Maybe I should start a thread on family recipes. Those recipes that have been handed down to us. Who knows? Those recipes our grandmothers used may have been handed to them by THEIR grandmothers. What do you think?

Yes I can, but they never turn out as good as Grans. She had Parkinsons before she died, but ever since I was little her right hand always shook, making the cup rattle in the saucer. She always blamed it on beating all those cakes for the village fetes LOL

does it count if your version is better because you tickered with the measurements? If so I have been handed down the recipie for victoria sponge cake / fairy cakes and short crust pastry but I have made them better by tweeking the ratios. Also have my ggaunt Bara brith (fruit cake) recipey, but she wouldn't tell a soul what she did that made her's so moist and morrish - we susspect it had something to do with alchohol but we don't for sure.
