How many people do you know of who are famous for the wrong reasons? Why is Jade Goody famous and how come she is able to earn £250,000 every year? :-s

Lucia You must have been reading my mind! LOL As I said on the other thread, it just goes to show what a sad state society is in today. Having said that, it isn't totally their faults. The media must take a large portion of the blame. They are the ones fueling the fire and offering enormous amounts of money for their stories, or to appear on tv shows etc. And I suppose us ordinary people in the street must take some of the blame too. If we didn't buy the newspapers or watch the tv shows, they wouldn't persist. I would just like to add at this point that I don't buy newspapers and have never watched anything with Jade Goody in it! lol

yes :-) that's why I refuse to watch BB to see losers wanting their own fifteen minutes of fame whatever it takes. It's totally unscrupulous.

You have to say Good for Her though - going from a complete unknow who went on Big Brother, so having her own Salon and a couple of tv shows! She's worked hard to turn her image around from the 'Minger' on BB. Wouldn't you do the same if you had the opportunity? Tara Palmer Tomkinson - now there's a fake celebrity, her fame if only because she has a rich Mummy and Daddy and attended all the posh parties! Kaye x

I don't understand why the world is so celebrity obsessed. I mean, who cares? lol

Lucia I got on our local bus the other day and one of the children at the school where I work yelled 'There's Mrs Evans!' (he's only 5). The bus driver looked at me and I said 'I'm a local celebrity'. But sadly, he didn't ask for my autograph. The fool, it could be worth a fortune later on!

Rebecca Loos(e) is another one!!! She is soooo annoying!

Kaye, I agree about TPT. Well yes fair do's to Jade Goody but I don't feel she's achieved anything really. I feel it's an insult to people who have worked hard all of their lives and don't earn half as much. Is society rewarding stupidity?

Unknown

Unknown Report 1 Jun 2006 16:28

But to return to your thread question - how is she allowed to earn that amount? Well, I don't think there are any laws concerning how much you are allowed to earn, just how much you have to pay back in tax. nell

Luciacw Report 1 Jun 2006 16:29

Hi Nell :-) lol looks like I phrased that the wrong way..terrible grammar for a Wednesday afternoon...'How come she is allowed to earn that much?'

Unknown

Unknown Report 1 Jun 2006 16:38

Because the people who pay her can afford to pay her because the public want to read and see. Depressing, but only a few hundred years ago, our ancestors' idea of fun was to watch cockerels fighting or bear-baiting. Last century, Charles Dickens was writing about how bad for society it was to allow public executions. nell

I think the contentious word is 'allowed'. If you'd said 'how is she ABLE to earn £25,000 a year' I'd agree with you. But 'allowed' ? As has been said, there's no law stopping someone earing lots of money.

Luciacw

Luciacw Report 1 Jun 2006 16:40

:-) yes I know what you mean Do you know what I mean though? I meant to phrase that rhetorically:-)

Luciacw

Luciacw Report 1 Jun 2006 16:41

Paul, yes I'll change it then, not very forgiving is it? I'm sorry, only meant meant to get my point across and didn't want to in a contentious way.

ahhh its not what you meant thats the issue though, its what you wrote :o) (just being pedantic)

I can't help feeling a bit sorry for Jade Goody, but I do agree in principal with the amount of money these 'Celebrities' make. In Jade's case at least she did something constructive with it - got trained to be a Beautician and opened a Salon, at least she's giving something back? It's footballers that really get my goat - I mean look at David Becham, he's worth an absolute fortune just because he's good a kicking a bit of leather around a field! It's not exactly Rocket Science is it? Sadly that is the way of the world these days - normal hard working people don't seem to get rewarded, just taxed to death. Kaye x

:-) ah I don't know about footballers. That's a skill in itself lol

What is more worrying is that younger people of today (obviously not yourself Lucia!) see these people as role models. It shows them that there is any easy way to get fame and fortune, and they don't want to go out and earn a 'proper' living.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 1 Jun 2006 16:52

The reason these nonentities become 'celebrities' is simple.............morons among the general public buy publications in which they feature, and watch their inane goings-on on TV. Reg

I'll say it again. The guys who empty our dustbins do more for the health of our community than the mechanic who spends all his working day at the hospital replacing hips. Pity about the disparity in pay. As for 'Celebrities', another word which has been hijacked. Now it means 'In your face and highly visible'. Not really worth celebrating is it?
