When i did it all on paper, it seemed fine....just sort of went wrong on the real thing.......thanks for your help and yes, it makes alot of sense! Ive been using the darker colour first. Now thats scared me Joan, you were told not to use black or white?? Oh ek...........im told i have to. I could open a store with the paints ive got lol and ive got brushes galore.........trouble is, loads of the paints/brushes, i hate working with. Ok, my multi coloured kitchen sink is now clean lol And Gwen.....i am not painting starkers lol

Donna, if you are trying to get a LIGHTER tone, then mix the lightest colour first... then add the darker one a *tip* at a time. I don't know exactly what it is that you are looking for but what I mean is..... If you want...say a LIGHT green with a yellow tinge to it mix YELLOW... and then add the green. Use this plan on all all your colours.... AND ALWAYS try them out on a separate peice of paper..... or you're lost! Does any of that help at all?? Deanna X

With the shadows i'd alwaydo light and work to lots of slightly darker tiny bits at a time

I usually mix the paint with more water for a lighter tone, then use the paint more concentrated for a darker tone. Eg, when painting skies I use dark ultramarine blue, then mix more water with it as you get nearer the skyline (where the sky meets the ground). The weaker the mix the lighter the tone. :0)) Joan xxxxx

Thinks Donna should use Josie's technique in the garden...lol

That's strange because I was always taught never to use white or black in watercolour, lol !!!! I use Payne's grey if I have to darken tones or create shadow (as shadow is rarely jet black). To lighten tones you need to look at one of the paint charts (Windsor & Newton artist watercolours are the best) where it will show you the paint tones. I use a lighter tone, then go along the chart to pick a darker one in the same group. :0)) Joan xxxxx

I have two rooms to paint (lounges), the drawing is done....i now have to paint each room, one warm colours, one cool. Its when im adding blacks or greys for the different hues...no matter what i do, according to the colour wheel, they are very wrong. Im fine with the white adding though. Oh help. Emailed my tutor, but no word yet.

My daughter is an illustrator not done any painting for a while since having the kids but she will be round tomorrow if you don't get sorted let me know what you are stuck with and I will ask her see if she can help.. She specialised in water colour. And though I say it myself is very good. Germaine. x
