Have you programmed it to do so? If you had a CD rom with your broadband kit, you need to install it on the laptop.

If your home connection is wired then just plugging the laptop into the phone socket won't work - you have to go via the broadband modem. The in-built one will be a dial-up one rather than broadband.

Errol, MY laptop was wireless ready, but still had to install the AOL software.......and connect to my router.......via a cable. Bob

eRRolSheep Report 5 Sep 2006 20:39

And without a local network, be it wired or wireless, you won't be able to access the broadband connection at the same time as the desktop

Bev Report 5 Sep 2006 20:39

no i do not have wireless connection, the neighbours do, but her lap top can pick that up the only cd i have is for the ADSL modem and as she is not using that modem it would not help........................would it? i have ADSL modem for my broadband which is through the phone line Bev

Bev

Bev Report 5 Sep 2006 20:41

Errol that makes sense her modem is a dial up or wirless so if we install my ADSL modem to her laptop you reckon that will work? Paul can the neighbours tell if we use next doors???? lol Bev

Bev Easier to let her logon to next doors he will only know if any of his software he uses detects intruders on his network Paul

AOL tend to do things a little differently because they want you to install their own Internet Explorer software. Basically, if you have a wireless network you should not need to install ISP specific software otherwise how do we all connect to internet hotspots without installing that hotspot's particular ISP software every time? I use my laptops in a variety of locations and they always connect. But I am assuming in this case that the connection is NOT through a wireless router.

You would need to plug the cable which comes out of the modem to YOUR PC in to her laptop to be able to use the net. As it seems you haven`t got a wireless router. Stu
