Afraid that won't work Bev unless you are using dial up - two entirely different protocols. You have to go either through a broadband modem or a network and router. (there are other ways too but I'll not confuse the issue)

The cable from your modem is the one which would need to be plugged into the laptop, or if you want the two online together you would need either a cross over Network lead or set up a wireless network, which would require some hardware

Tigger we know she can connect with next doors wireless connection but is that legal??? i mean can he tell she has connected and will her files etc. be safe? lol Tigger - commonly known as theft even if they are silly enough not to have secured it. Also bear in mind that it is a two way flow of information!!! In other words there would also be security issues for Bev. Like your thinking though lol Bev if you want to PM me I can talk you through it.

Some schools and Uni's have wireless internet set up in certain areas

Yes Bev you will have to connect the Broadband modem to her laptop and then probably install the software that came with it. What you have built in are a dial up modem and wireless capabilities but the wireless side will only work if you are already running a wireless network at home. You will not all be able to access the internet at the same time without installing a router.

she has brought the laptop to use at uni so i presume they have wireless connection that the students can use does anyone know? the bumf says that she has internet connection in her halls Bev

You would need to plug the cable which comes out of the modem to YOUR PC in to her laptop to be able to use the net. As it seems you haven`t got a wireless router. Stu

AOL tend to do things a little differently because they want you to install their own Internet Explorer software. Basically, if you have a wireless network you should not need to install ISP specific software otherwise how do we all connect to internet hotspots without installing that hotspot's particular ISP software every time? I use my laptops in a variety of locations and they always connect. But I am assuming in this case that the connection is NOT through a wireless router.

Bev Easier to let her logon to next doors he will only know if any of his software he uses detects intruders on his network Paul

Bev

Bev Report 5 Sep 2006 20:41

Errol that makes sense her modem is a dial up or wirless so if we install my ADSL modem to her laptop you reckon that will work? Paul can the neighbours tell if we use next doors???? lol Bev

Bev

Bev Report 5 Sep 2006 20:39

no i do not have wireless connection, the neighbours do, but her lap top can pick that up the only cd i have is for the ADSL modem and as she is not using that modem it would not help........................would it? i have ADSL modem for my broadband which is through the phone line Bev

eRRolSheep Report 5 Sep 2006 20:39

And without a local network, be it wired or wireless, you won't be able to access the broadband connection at the same time as the desktop

Bobtanian Report 5 Sep 2006 20:38

Errol, MY laptop was wireless ready, but still had to install the AOL software.......and connect to my router.......via a cable. Bob

eRRolSheep Report 5 Sep 2006 20:37

If your home connection is wired then just plugging the laptop into the phone socket won't work - you have to go via the broadband modem. The in-built one will be a dial-up one rather than broadband.

Paul (Tigger)

Paul (Tigger) Report 5 Sep 2006 20:36
