Is an annonymous letter that is slanderous something which can be used against someone or does it have to have a name to it? Thanks, Cazxxx |

I'm not sure I understand the question fully, but the person who is being libelled will have a hard case to prove if there's no way of indentifying the libeller. |

Thanks Jeff, the school my daughter attends have used a letter sent by an annonymous party against me, basically saying I was out partying till 5am while my kids were unattended, It would be funny if it wasnt causing me so much pain, i am here at home every single evening as in effect I am a single parent with Graeme being in iraq, cazxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |

That's terrible! I would be seeking advice. I'm not able to offer any informed comment but if it was me I would be striaght over to the school and insisting they withdrew the allegation; they are effectively giving credence to what is an otherwise malicious rumour. Unfortuately, my understanding is that the 'authorities' are quite at liberty to follow up on this. |

I agree entirely with Jeff. An anonymous letter has no substance, and the school should treat it with the contempt it deserves. |

Thankyou all ,I am suspicious it is someone who knows my spineless ex, the one who lives in the same town but has changed his no so 2 of the 3 kids cant phone him and ask why hes never taken them out and tells them their mum doesnt care and hasnt taken them to see their paternal granparents for 7 years, Sorry you dear people, i am taking the pain and trauma for their rejection whilst trying to deal with graeme being where he is and our 2 little ones, Sorry i'm moaning, I just need a break, Cazxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |

as an ex pc I would confront the head of the school and ask them to retract these allegations if they refuse to do so attend the citizens advice for free. At the end of the day it is only your word against them and you are the only person who knows where you are at 5am. |

Caz, don't know the laws over there but sounds to me like everyone else has the right idea. Have dealt with a lot of anonymous letters over the years and if there is no signature then there would be nothing to worry about. If I have the story right then someone like childrens aide etc might follow up even thou it was anonymous, so long as you can prove the story is a lie they will just close the file. It is unfortunate you will have to go thro with their process but try not to worry about it. Good luck with it all Debs |

Caz, as Peter said - you are the only one who knows where you were. The school would have to prove otherwise. |

Peter thankyou so much, my kids have been my life and I choose to be there for them rather than using my degree, I dont have much of a life apart from them so cant deal too well with this, To others who have had difficult teens, it doesnt mean the Mums { and dads who are good ones } dont care does it? Caz,, Sorry to hear that this horrid so so has caused you this grief.. But don't know if your school policy is the same as the one I work at... they have to treat things like this serious, and report them, with out asking questions.. But if you have a meeting it might not be the case.. I hope you get it sorted very soon. Pat |

A letter may be libellous but a spoken untruth is slanderous. If the sender can be identified, then he may be proceeded against. If the school has acted upon such a letter and disseminated the contents then they too may be guilty of libel or slander len |
