Manchester has 'won' the vote to have a new Super Casino. Just curious as to how you would feel if your town/city was going to get one, as I seem to be in the minority in thinking they will bring more problems than they will cure. T.O.R. }:o))

The majority of people I have spoken to believe there is no need for them. It was yet another stupid idea from this government to provide a solution to a problem that never existed in the first place. Their real motive is surely to collect more stealth taxes.

TOR Report 30 Jan 2007 17:19

Peter - I think more worrying than stealth tax it will be a tax on the unemployed and working classes. A bit like the national lottery. That's not even taking into account that it is often crime organisations who run casinos.

Cyprus

Cyprus Report 30 Jan 2007 17:25

Absolutley no! We don't have casinos in the free areas of Cyprus, but the government is being pushed to allow them. There are many in the occupied area and many Greeks are losing so much money over there that their children are going hungry(or they would be if the close family ties didn't exist) Absolutely no Manchester--I love my city too much to want any more problems there.

Hayley this was in Manchester Evening News last September a casino with more than 1,000 unlimited jackpot slot-machines built as part of a huge leisure complex near the City of Manchester stadium. The project could create 2,700 jobs. Seemingly decision still has to be ratified by Government.

Hayley - the way crime increases around casino towns in America I hope at least 700 of those 2700 jobs are police officers and paramedics. They'll be needed to cope with the increases in shootings, muggings, drug offences and other serious crime. For the possible 2700 extra jobs how many people are going to lose their homes or on a smaller (but more important) scale deprive their children of food because they have gambled the family income away. Sorry I'm seriously against this. I gamble but NOT casinos - poker and bridge with friends - a sociable evening that happens to involve money. What is sociable about casinos? Sorry I'll get off my high horse now. T.O.R. xx

T O R I can understand that...but a gambler is a glamber and will go anywhere for the buzz just like a drug addict will for a fix. Wheather it be a super casino or a betting shop.. I thought it would go to London as they have a great big dome there doing nothing.

Carol in Rochester, New York Report 30 Jan 2007 17:47

Tor, Can I ask you where you got your statistical information from, regarding the rise in crime in the cities here with casinos?

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 30 Jan 2007 17:47

T.O.R. yes you are probably right in that those who can least afford will end up paying. To employ 2,000 people, say at a nominal £10k salary, implies £20 million wage bill, with overheads, say, £50 million to run it? Assuming the house takes 5% this requires a turnover of one billion pounds every year, and that is some money for just one casino.
