Hayley, Do you want the polite reply or the not-so-polite reply? :)))) If pushed to call them anything, then it's their first names. Like you, I could never call anyone else Mum, especially now she's no longer here. Mandy :)

Christian names for my in-laws, I only have one Mum and Dad and they are the people I call just that. I really don't think that if they did expect me to call them Mum and Dad I would do it, just wouldn't happen, they are my in-laws whom I have a very good relationship with but that's it, they're not my mum and dad! Hayley, I call my in-laws mum and dad. Having lost both my parents in the early years of my marriage - I cannot say anything other than they have been the most supportive and caring in-laws I could have wished for. It just happened that way and we are all happy with it. This is NOT taking anything away from my DEAR mum and dad, who I still wish were here today and could have seen their 2 grandsons - who they would have loved so much. Anne in North London

I called my in-laws Mum & Dad, but I have known them since I was 14 and they were like second parents to me. OH called my parents Mum & Dad too, and my grandparents were Nan & Grandad to him. Both our SiL and our DiL call us by our first names though. SiL calls his own parents and grandparents by their first names too, and has always done since he was a small child. Sue xx

Please don't misunderstand me... Its my choice to call my MIL by her first name, she has never asked me to call her anything and I love her very much. She has been a great MIL and a wonderful Grandmother to my children. I heard my sister call ( she has been married for 28yrs) her MIL Mam. To be honest I thought it quite old fashioned so just asked.

Sally Moonchild Report 13 Feb 2007 22:49

Yes I did call my in-laws Mum and Dad, they asked me to and I obliged......years later when I was talking to my Mum, she said she was jealous (too strong a word really) that I had called MiL Mum......when my Mum died, I could not bear to call MiL Mum, and she understood, and I started calling them by their Christian names......I don't think FiL was impressed...... Because of this I insist that my children's spouses call us by our Christian names......and when we sign cards.....we sign twice,....Sally & Mike, Mum and Dad.... You only have one Mum and Dad.....
