Tell the operator of the thing how you feel. I am sure they will have had other people like that. And small children would find it scary I expect, so the operator will know how to deal with you, short of thumping you on the head with a big hammer!

Hi - I've had 3 in the past year. I pretend I'm lying on a sunbed - LOL!! Seriously, you will have a set of headphones so you can listen to a radio channel of your choice (at least I did where I have mine done) - you will also have a buzzer in your hand so you can buzz the radiographer if you feel a panic attack coming on & you can talk to them & they can talk to you - don't worry!! You'll be fine!! Ails x

You can be got out fairly quickly. Remain positive & go in with the attitude that you CAN get through it!! Remember that it's part of a process that is there to help the Drs find out what's wrong with you. Ails x

Also - they should offer you a cushion to put under your knees as lying on your back totally flat can be uncomfortable - if they forget to offer you one then ask!! You won't find out your results for about 4 - 6 weeks. Let us know how you get on after your scan!! Ails x

Good luck, I think someone's young daughter had one a little while ago, and she was nervous as was her mum, but it went ok. Lie back and think of England, oops, no sorry, wrong situation lol Try to think of something nice, like lying in the sun on a beach with the waves rippling in the background and a nice cool drink beside you, and before you know it you will be out again Liz

hi Sue Dont worry easy said than done i know, i have read somewhere (but dont quote me on this) that if you are very nervous you can ask your doc for a mild sedative. I had an mri scan about 8 years ago and they do give you a buzzer if you feel panic rising it may have even improved now, just dont sit there worrying ask and explain to your doc how you are feeling. Good luck Sharmala.

I had an MRI scan last year - and I don't like enclosed spaces either but it wasn't half as bad as I thought. I'm sure you'll be fine. I took a couple of CD's with me and listened to them, most have got facilities for piping the music to you I think. I'll be honest - I did have a mild panic when I opened my eyes and the 'ceiling' was a lot closer than I thought it would be....nothing at ALL to do with getting the scrummy radiographer to come in and hold my hand for a couple of minutes! Honest LOL It really isn't bad at all - a bit noisy, so get them to turn the music up loud! You can talk to them when the machine isn't actually scanning, which it does in short bursts. And they will give you all the reassurance you need. Good luck and I hope everything turns out well Mags xxx

I have had several and totally freaked out during my first one... Since that one I get around it by getting some sedatives from my GP and also I put an eye mask on so that I can't see (cos even though I tell myself not to open my eyes I can't resist) I can have them no problem now. Hope everything is ok Sue Gaynor :-)
