Actually, what made me think of the hammer was my mother. Many years ago when she was going to have an op she told the anaesthetist to make sure she was properly under, was nervous in case she wasnt. He produced the most enormous spanner and told her that if he felt she wasnt he could hit her on the head with it to make sure she was out! He probably found that a bit of humour helped the patient to relax, making his job that much easier. Huia. |

Well done Sue, Daughter said they werent that nice and she felt a panic coming on BUT she so needed to go through with it to confirm her Hodkins was in remission. She closed her eyes and tried to drift off and apart from a few moments when she felt a welling coming up she was surprised when they finally said ALL DONE. Thankfully it confirmed shes now in remission. She said that she would rather go through it 100 times than to have chemo again!! |

Well I did it .....freaked out to start with ...as soon as he cliped down the head thing I lost it . Tried 3 times in the end, he said he would re-book me but I didn't want to waste the appointment so I told him to turn the music right up before he cliped the head thing down so I didn't know it had gone on.Hubby was aloud to come in and hold my leg! It did help to know he was there.I think it took longer to strap me in than it did to have the scan done. All I could think of was all your comments esp the one about the hammer! I would like to thank you all for your help and encouragement,it really did help Sue x |

Like Gaynor I freaked out during my first one, suffer badly from claustrophobia. During the latest one I was alowd to have a friend sitting at the end just holding my ankle, she had to wear earphones but still complained about the noise but it gave me more confidence feeling her there. Best of luck, you will be fine. Fran |

I have had several and totally freaked out during my first one... Since that one I get around it by getting some sedatives from my GP and also I put an eye mask on so that I can't see (cos even though I tell myself not to open my eyes I can't resist) I can have them no problem now. Hope everything is ok Sue Gaynor :-) |

I had an MRI scan last year - and I don't like enclosed spaces either but it wasn't half as bad as I thought. I'm sure you'll be fine. I took a couple of CD's with me and listened to them, most have got facilities for piping the music to you I think. I'll be honest - I did have a mild panic when I opened my eyes and the 'ceiling' was a lot closer than I thought it would be....nothing at ALL to do with getting the scrummy radiographer to come in and hold my hand for a couple of minutes! Honest LOL It really isn't bad at all - a bit noisy, so get them to turn the music up loud! You can talk to them when the machine isn't actually scanning, which it does in short bursts. And they will give you all the reassurance you need. Good luck and I hope everything turns out well Mags xxx |

hi Sue Dont worry easy said than done i know, i have read somewhere (but dont quote me on this) that if you are very nervous you can ask your doc for a mild sedative. I had an mri scan about 8 years ago and they do give you a buzzer if you feel panic rising it may have even improved now, just dont sit there worrying ask and explain to your doc how you are feeling. Good luck Sharmala. |

Good luck, I think someone's young daughter had one a little while ago, and she was nervous as was her mum, but it went ok. Lie back and think of England, oops, no sorry, wrong situation lol Try to think of something nice, like lying in the sun on a beach with the waves rippling in the background and a nice cool drink beside you, and before you know it you will be out again Liz |

Also - they should offer you a cushion to put under your knees as lying on your back totally flat can be uncomfortable - if they forget to offer you one then ask!! You won't find out your results for about 4 - 6 weeks. Let us know how you get on after your scan!! Ails x |
