I was at school in South Wales and we celebrated it at both Junior and Senior school.

It was the day when we all (children in Wales) sent special messages to children in the Empire, and then we had a half-day. By the time it became Commonwealth Day I had moved to Somerset, where it wasn't celebrated.

I'm in the north east too Mau. Maybe we were the only ones to get the afternoon off!!

we only celebrated St David's Day - lots of Welsh songs of course and Welsh Hats and cloth caps

ah nice to see some remember Empire day. :-)

It was a big day at our schools in the N.East England. We dressed up in national costumes, someone was always Brittania, I was chosen one time to be a Welsh girl AnninC ...and for weeks we rehearsed 'stirring heroic songs' and dances.
Then the Mayor would announce that we all had the afternoon off :-D ....happy innocent days

Ours were church of England schools too Ann....strange some celebrated and some didn't :-S..but as you say it was probably different boroughs throughout.

Empire Day - 24th May - I went to grammar school in the early fifties - never remember having a day off though!

I remember Empire Day at primary school and marching round with our flags and singing special hymns (can't remember what they were now) but I don't remember getting a holiday. I went to grammar school in 1952 and we didn't celebrate it there.

Glad you have found people that also celebrated Mau, as I have said to you, we didn't celebrate it and I was at school from 1945 to 1956. Maybe it was not a National school holiday but up to local authorities. My primary school was a church of England School, maybe they didn't celebrate such things :-D

Don't remember Empire Day. Dad used to have Trafalgar Day off school as he went to the same school as Nelson (not at the same time though :-D )

Funny ,as when we get older we recall all these little events that we never did when younger...
Ah well ...as long as we still keep up with the 21st century,it's nice to go down memory lane.lets keep them coming!! :-) :-)

It's still a holiday here in Canada and still called Victoria Day.

I used to love Empire Day at junior school. The whole school would march round the school yard carrying flags (mine was always a tiny little thing and I used to envy the "rich" kids who had great big ones).

Afterwards all the kids would chant " Emprie Day, the 24th of May, if you don't give us a holiday, we'll all run away". Then the headmistress would announce that we had the afternoon off and everyone would cheer and wave their flags.
