To use up a lot of apples, I made some little cakes, sponge with some chopped apple and sultana put into it. They didn't look particularly spectacular.

I gave three to a friend who didn't like them because they had apple in so she left them on the side to give back to me.

Her daughter-in-law visited her, bringing her own granddaughter.

The little girl pestered for one of these cakes and then ate both of them with great delight

It seems she was attracted by the novelty of a home made cake because she very rarely has one.

How different that is from my own experience. With a brilliant grandmother who kept us supplied with home-made cake at all times, I would never miss an opportunity to eat the gaudiest shop bought cake I could find.

You cannot beat home baking, my mother regularly baked a raisin & sultana fruit tart; an apple tart; a couple of rounds of shortbread, a cherry cake, a mixed fruit cake; some fruit scones - my brother and I would have arguments as to who got to lick the bowls and mixing spoons ;-)

But then we would think some gooey bit of tat from a shop was something special.

This little girl probably doesn't have home baking so those flat little lumps of ordinariness were something special to her.

Fred's mate usually has the spoon to lick.

I get to lick the bowls and spoons: that's my treat.

We thought shop bought cakes were a treat too, because my Mum did all her own baking and was very good at it. A cream split or iced fancy was so tempting for us when we went into the shops.

Good to hear your efforts were appreciated, Sharron.

lol

I remember a visitor who brought chocolate eclairs to our house...... I'm sure my mother was "affronted" because she was a wonderful baker.

I think I was maybe 9, my brother 7.

My brother and I really wanted those eclairs........ and were SO disappointed with them! We'd rather have had mum's lovely sponge with cream & raspberry in the middle & chocolate icing.

I rarely buy cakes....... but OH often comes home with a light fruit cake.... I'm not real fond of fruit cake, but I do make a half-decent pineapple/fruit cake.

:-D

I love fruit cake, once I have overcome the memory of it being just the ordinary stuff that Nan makes.

Never liked currants when I was a child. I think it was because they would burn on the outside of the cake and be bitter and they were 'ordinary' to me.

I love them now in Eccles cakes if I make them.

C`mon Sharron, I need some help over here sweetie. :-D
I baked my first ever cake yesterday.
Her indoors came home the other day with a large carrier bag, chock bang full of fruit .Pears, 2 kinds of Apples, Oranges, Bananas, Kiwi fruit and a large Pineapple, she had won in a raffle at her Club

Now I`m the only one in the house that eats fruit.
So. I was at a quandary what to do with it all couldn`t give it away, the daughter didn`t want any.
I had never tried Kiwi fruits before but thought I would give them a try not bad really a little bit tangy but I will finish them all off, think I`m getting the taste for them Mmm.

Never tried fresh Pineapple before so didn`t know what do with it.
Had a look on the internet for Ideas ,and came up with this Recipe for Pineapple and Banana cake.

Looked dead simple to me ,so thought I would have go.
Result rather large cake looked as if it was burnt when I took it out looked more like chocolate ginger cake, then I realized the Pretty large amount of Sugar and Pineapple had caramelized.
Anyways I now have this pretty large and very moist fruitcake to demolish and being as you say you like fruit cakes. (and I am defiantly one of those, Nut Case more like)
I was wondering, if you would join me in eating it . (far too much for one) :-D :-D

In my humble opinion It needs custard.

I have put our apples into a sponge mixture with some sultanas and dates I had hanging about.

Baked it and cut it in portions. Have frozen them so we have something to eat with custard later.

Be careful with the kiwis. I recently gorged on some and ended up with a sore tongue. It was sort of smooth.

Budgie Rustler Report 23 Oct 2013 11:32

I peeled the Kiwis first first never tried them before, never liked the look of them.

And yes that is exactly what I thought about my cake, would be better with custard or carnation milk and served as a sweet (pudding). :-D :-D

I love kiwifruit! OH hates them.

I cut them in half & eat them with a spoon.

A cousin (2nd cousin) of mine in NZ is a kiwifruit farmer... a Kiwi kiwifruit farmer?

<3

We've tried growing them, without success (you need male & female plants, although we planted both, one always died)........... but we grow bananas, passionfruit & pineapples (our pineapples are the size of hand-grenades lol).

If you'd like my recipe for pineapple fruitcake, let me know.

Is there no end to your talents Rollo? :-)

Talking of shop cakes. My OH had to go to the post office yesterday and the cake shop is almost next door. He couldn't resist and came home with a custard slice for me 'because i know you like them'. Well no actually I like custard tarts. neverthe less, don't look a gift horse etc I ate it and it was so sickly sweet, wouldn't rush to buy another one. It was huge too. :-D
