:-(

I made a carrot cake last week.

We liked it, it's all gone, so I wanted to make another one.......

All mixed, just the walnuts left to go in

I keep all the nuts in one container, in their original packets. Tipped out some walnuts to chop them........ they were all stuck together..... with COBWEBS!!

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(

I didn't use the walnuts, I used pecans instead.

Does anyone want the recipe?

Urgh!

Hope the pecan/carrot cake tastes just as good, but try not to think of those walnuts lol

I know lots of things can have little weevils growing in them if left too long (flour and such) but not heard of this with nuts

They're not near their use-by date yet....... and no weevils, just this sticky icky cobweb......... they're now in the bin!

I won't tell Himself.

We both ate the first cake......... didn't notice anything on the walnuts...... but you never know!

I haven't noticed a crawly feeling in my stomach...... yet... and I don't have an urge to walk on the ceiling.

shudder :-(

Do you know what?

I would have cleaned the cobwebs off and used them.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 2 Sep 2013 22:21

could the "web" have been fungus threads????

that's more likely, I think, with nuts than spider webs.

Nolls from Harrogate

Nolls from Harrogate Report 2 Sep 2013 22:27

Fungus threads? never heard of them but still not an edible option I would think :-0

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 2 Sep 2013 23:32

it looked like spider webs, and they were sticky ewwwwww

I didn't examine the nuts too closely....... scared I'd find a spider! Whooooooooooosh over the balcony.

I think I heard birds coughing yesterday afternoon.

:-(

We can't keep things for too long here especially in warm weather, because of the humidity. Things I used to keep in the pantry now go in the fridge because they go fuzzy.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Sep 2013 00:35

your temperatures and humidity were why I was thinking along the lines of a fungal infection ........

...... fungal hyphae can look cobwebby as they spread over the surface of things.

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

How absurd! to swallow a bird,

Perhaps she'll die.

If you're interested, here's the recipe

CARROT & ZUCCHINI CAKE

2 eggs
½ cup soft brown sugar
1¼ cups self-raising flour
½ teaspoon salt
¾ teaspoon ground cardamom
1 cup grated zucchini
1 cup grated carrot (about 2 carrots)
1/3 cup (80ml) vegetable oil
¼ cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Frosting
250g cream cheese, chopped, softened
1/3 cup icing sugar
2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Grease and line a deep 20cm x 10cm loaf tin.
Preheat oven to 150°C fan-forced/170°C conventional.

Beat the eggs with the sugar until light and fluffy.

Sift flour, salt and cardamom together; gently fold into the egg mixture.

Grate zucchini into a sieve over a bowl and squeeze out any excess moisture; place in a large bowl. Grate carrot into the same bowl. Add the oil, walnuts and vanilla; stir to combine. Gently fold the vegetable and oil mixture into the flour and egg mixture until well combined.

Pour into prepared tin. Bake in preheated oven about 1 hour or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool cake in tin 20 minutes before transferring onto a wire rack to cool completely.

While cake is baking, make icing by beating cream cheese with remaining ingredients until smooth.

When cake is completely cool, spread thickly with frosting.

:-)

I didn't have cardamom, I used cinnamon.

Cobwebs are optional.
