All my dried fruit is kept in separate containers. Pasta is stored in glass jars with rubber stoppers around the lids. Unopened packets of pasta are stored in a plastic box with a lid on it. It's only the nuts that I keep in the one container, because I only buy small packets; even raw cashes (used in stir-fry) I don't keep them for very long.

I don't buy in bulk or keep things for very long, because of the weather conditions here (high humidity a lot of the time), unless I keep things in the fridge. We have two BIG fridges, both stuffed full, and there's only two of us in the house.

It's almost spring, and not humid right now. 25C today, and beautiful :-D

I think I'll be cleaning out the pantry this weekend! :-(

I think I might just clear out my baking cupboard this week :-(

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Sep 2013 01:49

Probably best in future to store your nuts in separate containers.

I got an infestation of "food grubs" or weevils in a packet of spaghetti once ......... the packet had been opened, closed and sealed with tape, but they had still got in ........... or maybe they were in the package when I bought it, as food stores can be infested with the weevils.

I now put each packet of pasta in a plastic bag, wrapped the bag around the packet with the open end folded in, and secure it in place with an elastic (rubber) band

My nuts and dried fruit are all kept in individual plastic containers ............ many of the fruits are sold in such re-usable ones.

LadyScozz Report 5 Sep 2013 00:04

Oh Yuk!

The packet was open, folded over & kept closed with a rubber band. It was in a tupperware container with other packets of nuts........ must check them!

Bad enough if they got into the other nuts, hope they haven't got into everything else.

could be indian meal moths, their larvae spin web

speaking from experience, they are g**s to get rid of once they are in your pantry, and love nuts, dried pasta, dried beans

I'm sure mine arrived as a "free gift" in a pack of brazil nuts or almonds

If you're interested, here's the recipe

CARROT & ZUCCHINI CAKE

2 eggs
½ cup soft brown sugar
1¼ cups self-raising flour
½ teaspoon salt
¾ teaspoon ground cardamom
1 cup grated zucchini
1 cup grated carrot (about 2 carrots)
1/3 cup (80ml) vegetable oil
¼ cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Frosting
250g cream cheese, chopped, softened
1/3 cup icing sugar
2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Grease and line a deep 20cm x 10cm loaf tin.
Preheat oven to 150°C fan-forced/170°C conventional.

Beat the eggs with the sugar until light and fluffy.

Sift flour, salt and cardamom together; gently fold into the egg mixture.

Grate zucchini into a sieve over a bowl and squeeze out any excess moisture; place in a large bowl. Grate carrot into the same bowl. Add the oil, walnuts and vanilla; stir to combine. Gently fold the vegetable and oil mixture into the flour and egg mixture until well combined.

Pour into prepared tin. Bake in preheated oven about 1 hour or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool cake in tin 20 minutes before transferring onto a wire rack to cool completely.

While cake is baking, make icing by beating cream cheese with remaining ingredients until smooth.

When cake is completely cool, spread thickly with frosting.

:-)

I didn't have cardamom, I used cinnamon.

Cobwebs are optional.

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die.
There was an old woman who swallowed a spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a bird,
How absurd! to swallow a bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a cat,
Imagine that! to swallow a cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a dog,
What a hog! to swallow a dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a goat,
Just opened her throat! to swallow a goat,
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,

your temperatures and humidity were why I was thinking along the lines of a fungal infection ........

...... fungal hyphae can look cobwebby as they spread over the surface of things.

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 2 Sep 2013 23:32

it looked like spider webs, and they were sticky ewwwwww

I didn't examine the nuts too closely....... scared I'd find a spider! Whooooooooooosh over the balcony.

I think I heard birds coughing yesterday afternoon.

:-(

We can't keep things for too long here especially in warm weather, because of the humidity. Things I used to keep in the pantry now go in the fridge because they go fuzzy.

Fungus threads? never heard of them but still not an edible option I would think :-0

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 2 Sep 2013 22:21

could the "web" have been fungus threads????

that's more likely, I think, with nuts than spider webs.
