Are you buying as you normally did, or have recent events affected your shopping/dietary habits.

Nope - no changes to our purchases

We are in our late 50's and as OH said when this all came out - in the 60's & 70's there were so many additives in our food then we are all probably immune or our insides are so pickled that it would not make a great deal of difference.

If it tasted good before and still tastes good now - I am not bothered.

I have lived on my own on and off for most of the past 25 years and eat a lot of chilled ready meals, usually the microwavable ones. They do not appear to have caused me any health problems, and at my age, I am nearly 70, I have no intention of changing my eating habits now :-)

We eat a lot of chicken. Occasionally get Pork chump chops as a Sat treat and our butchers own made pork & leek sausages. he also does some lovely minted lamb chops.

The pork i byt at Tesco and its in its own tray of about 8 chops for £5 no chance of horse getting in there. Mind you I wouldnt be adverse to eating it so long as I know what I am eating.

FootieAngel Report 4 Mar 2013 12:25

I'm reluctant to buy to be fair. I don't buy too much pre-packed stuff but I was appalled to think I may have eaten horse. I know it's not bad for me, but I subscribe to horse charities and like to think I'm protecting them not purchasing them to eat.

I don't eat a lot of meat anyway, but if I feel an overwhelming urge for some fatty, aggression charged red meat :-D I buy from Waitrose.... 'we KNOW our farmers'.... as we don't have proper butchers near us, unfortunately.

Must admit it has made me wary. I did occasionally buy the odd 'made-up' meal, particularly for the OH for when I was not at home.
I did like to buy the 'best mince' from the supermarket, as it is much leaner than that of the butchers, and after a gross experience with mince in 1954 in Glasgow, the memory has stayed with me. But, our meat in those days was so dire, it probably was horse-meat.
I would like to buy it again, as the dishes I made with it, suited my digestive system. Having a Chronic Bowel Disorder, and ever nearing that Liverpool Pathway, I don't want to upset the applecart.
Perhaps this week, I should take the bull by horns, so to speak, and buy some and give it a try.

Many Thanks

We don't eat loads of meat, and I buy most of it from our local farm shop. The pork is especially good, as the pigs are farmed on site. They also sell really nice free-range chickens, pricey but really superior taste and texture, and nothing gets wasted. We have the odd ready meal but I'm not that keen, find them over salted and sloppy sometimes. The horse-meat scandal won't affect our current shopping habits :-)

No, I believe that the recent horse meat scandal will have made the supermarkets more careful of their suppliers and anyway seldom buy ready meals.

Where is your freezer M, just in case I should want to, uh, borrow some, as our funds do not allow such luxury. :-D

I have not changed my eating habits I shop mainly at a large tesco, still buying their steak mince as well as Willow farm chickens, pork chops etc. As long as they all now take extra care, which they seem to be doing, it is fine by me. I rarely buy ready meals.
Where I have changed a little is that I used to have chilli in restaurants, as this is obviously bought in, until I am sure that all checks have been carried out I have stopped ordering chilli. This is not because I am averse to eating horse, I am averse to eating anything that has been pumped into said horse. :-)

I bought an electric mincer some time ago and do my own,,,,,,I buy braising steak take all the fatty bits off or rump steak from my butcher in a bulk,,,totally different from the disgusting stuff I've seen passed off in shops......plus do burgers of chicken or turkey for family for freezing,so quick and easy,plus knowing whats gone in is a big bonus.......

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 4 Mar 2013 13:36

We have changed our purchasing habits, but that is down to the cost on the shelf more than any thing else.

I stopped buying Beef mince when BSE was first discovered and swapped to frozen lamb mince usually from New Zealand. The Beef mince to lamb was to try and protect the offspring rather than ourselves.

We do occasionally buy chilled meat meals if they have a yellow sticker.

I don't buy a great deal of ready meals but I now make sure I buy ALL my meat from Morrisons as they have their own abatoirs........bought most of it from there previously because they do different cuts from other supermarkets...

Julia

Julia Report 4 Mar 2013 13:53

I periodically do a bulk buy at one of our many farm shops, but I still buy Morrisons Best Mince. Also, if the bulk buy is running abit low, I will also buy chops etc. from Morrisons for the same reasons as Muffy. Had no complains with their meats.

I do often use turkey mince , because of the lesser fat content. When in a sauce or gravy my husband does not notice. :-D

I will only be using Quorn when somebody shows me a field of it growing :-D :-D

ChrisofWessex Report 4 Mar 2013 14:30

Well our local butcher can sell T-bone steaks at less than 1/2 price of supermarkets and only a few weeks ago just as the row about mince broke out - OH order some steak mince from him - butcher cut it off, put it in the mincer and said to OH ' you can't get fresher than that'.

I have said to OH to look for the bargain roasts in supermarkets.

My gran would go into the local butchers and ask for a pound of steak mince, and qualify that by saying not that stuff in the tray in the window, freshly minced please and make sure you trim the fat off. I am sure the butcher and the grocer next door to him lived in fear of her :-D
