I understand and accept that if a packet is too large for the letter box, and I am not there, I will have to go to the depot and collect it. No problem as the depot is near Tesco so we combine it with shopping.

However, this morning we collected 2 packets from the depot, tied together with elastic bands. Neither needed signing for and at least one of them would go through the letter box on its own. Do the postmen not realise that, as they have each got an individual address label on it they are individual items and can be treated separately?

Also, somebody asked why they couldn't leave the packet with a neighbour. (Bearing in mind that it was recently in the paper that they now can.) The answer was, they can if they have a note naming a particular neighbour willing to take packets in. I suppose that means leaving the note stuck on the door as we never have the same postman two days running.

if I'm expecting a parcel I leave a note on the door asking that any parcel be put over the back fnce - garden is secure

I take lots of parcels for my next door neighbour but these are not delivered by Royal Mail

I had one parcel put in my wheelie bin by the postman.

At least he put a note through the door telling me about it.

Our postman has an infuriating habit of pushing a note through the door to say we weren´t in when he hasn´t even knocked. This has happened 3 times recently.
We then have to collect the post the following day. Nothing to do with the fact it won´t go through the letter box. We have a letter box, but most houses here don´t so the postie just assumes there isn´t one without looking, so if the post can´t be pushed under the door, it´s taken away.
Conversely we have found that if the front window is open, the post is thrown onto the living room floor.

Ann, I suspect they sometimes don't bring the parcels with them in the first place - in case there is no-one home and they have to take them back.

I've had a card through the door more than once when I was actually home - postman hadn't bothered to knock which makes me believe he only brought a card and not the parcel.

We have a parcel box below the letter box on the wall and our postman even signs for things if we are out.

I suppose a perk for living in a rural area. However I sometimes think that he saves up post to deliver as it can arrive in big batches.

Only last week, the postman asked us if we would take a parcel for next door, which we happily did.
They didnt have a note i'm certain, as have only been there four a couple of months.
On the other hand, we had ordered a delivery of stationery, a large one of half a dozen big boxes. We arrived home one day, to find the whole lot in our porch. Good job it was not raining, as it is an open porch.!!!

I dread getting that note in the door, it means I have to take a bus to collect my parcel I chased one postman down the street as he had simply put the form in the door and scarpered.!. :-D

As Island said i no that they often don't bother to bring the parcel with them,

I saw the postman walking down my path as i was going out so met him half way he gave me the card and told me the parcel was to big for my letter box so no point in him bringing it as most people would be out at work, despite the card saying they had tried to deliver it,

Then they wonder why they have been loosing business over the last 10/15 years

We have a key to our neighbour's house so OH goes
next door to take parcel from postman and put on her table.

Postman says he can't have it as he'd already knocked and no
one was in.

WAIT FOR IT.....

So OH says if I enter her house and you try again can i take
parcel when I answer the door.
Yes that would be OK but he had to drive forward and walk back with
said parcel!!

When OH told me I almost PMSL.

Wisechild. This has happened to me several times. I have seen the postman walking away from my door leaving a note through the letterbox saying I was not at home when actually I have been in the house. One time I was in the garden and the delivery man came down the path but obviously did not see me. I saw him walking back up the path and get into his van, so I took to my heels and chased after him banging on the back of the van. He looked out of the window and I said "Did you have a parcel for me"? He replied "Yes the porch door was open so I left it in there" Ooohh I did feel a silly billy.
Don't you just hate it when someone shakes their head slowly whilst giving a condescending smile. :-P

I am pretty certain they will have had the parcels with them because twice recently we have got home to find the dreaded red card and walked down the road to find the postman (knowing he is still in the area because the van is still in the road), and the parcels have been in his bag. Once I didn't even have the red card as I saw him before I reached home and was expecting a parcel so asked him if he had left a card. He produced the parcel and said tear up the card when you get home. To be fair, although we have many different postmen he is more regular than most. Of for the first 10-15 years we lived here when we had the same postman all the time. Good old Jim, he retired then it went to pot!!

A few months ago I spotted a courier/parcel delivery van pull up outside a house.

Saw him knocking at the door and getting no reply.

Could not believe what he did next. Yes threw the parcel through an open front room window.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 6 Nov 2012 15:34

It appears from some replies that if the postman/woman has a van then the said parcel is generally in the van?

My postman/woman does not use a van he/she only has a bag and there own 2 legs to carrie all the post which may explain why they don't want to Carrie parcels that they may or may not be able to deliver

I was expecting 2 parcels once. I was at work so had the 'note' left. I went to pick them up, but they only gave me one. when I queried this, they had a rummage, then came back and asked me what the parcel looked like!!!?????

I had to bite my tongue - not the time for smartarse comments, as I wanted the parcel - but managed to reply - probably smaller than a shoebox!

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 6 Nov 2012 15:52

The van delivers two postmen who then go off with their bag (in one case which is where the parcel was produced from) and with a little trolley in another.

I wouldn't leave a note on my front door, its an invitation to burglars as you are advertising your house is empty. :-0
