Eldrick Report 13 Apr 2012 08:00

Yes i probably did. Ive posted it again because things move on, new expertise develops and new records become available.

Not in catholic record circles, it would seem, however. I wonder why they think it necessary to keep things over 150 years old cloaked in secrecy. One can only ponder why they wont release orphanage records or even say if they still have them.

Kay???? Report 13 Apr 2012 08:19

E,,

these records are often not well detailed and only sometimes have a name or initial.......and many have Foundling by their name.......as unwed or even married left babies and children outside or in the church.

St Philips Kensington site doesnt state if thats RC,,,,,,but maybe it was unconnected,

RC are like a secret sect where records are concerned and not much gets released concidering.

Its not there any more or else that would be the obvious first port of call.

Catholic orphanage records are difficult. The day to day records so as to speak have all the children numbered eg 112,113 114 and so on. 112 may be called, say, Catherine, and so on. Thus the staff had no idea of the true name, neither did the child. There is another book which translates (say) Catherine into Marie o'Rourke. This book often has the names of the mother, rarely father and/or the presenting people. Quite often no name was known. The orphanage often holds records of the children when they started working.

Do not assume that any baptismal name is that given by one or other of the parents.

For the British Isles significant numbers of children were sent to Canada and Australia right up to the 1960s.

Sometimes these records survived, sometimes not. In any case getting hold of them is extremely difficult. AFAIK the only person with a legal right to see these records is the orphan in question.

Good luck.

Its only 1861 that im interested in, but thanks for that. There just seems to be a determined effort to resist any enquries. Its not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it makes me more determined to find what im looking for, :-)

I think there are only a limited number of parish records available because they do not agree with the 're-baptism of souls' agenda - as set by the familysearch site.

They do tend to keep this sort of thing close to their proverbial chests.

You would be able to view the 1861 census though.

There is now a St. Philip's School - presumably a connection ??

Something to do with The Brompton Oratory?

Yes, I've seen the 1861 census, its all just initials as normal for institutions.

The school was founded in 1934, I believe and can't help.

Yes, I know they are in conflict with the mormons, can't say I blame them too much for that one but regardless, its not a BMD record I'm after, just some info about a resident.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 13 Apr 2012 09:16

have you found them in 1871?

Its doubtful a detailed report will be found,unless they were a priest,,,,,or nun. :-D :-D :-D :-D ;-)

have you tried on rootschat for London? many learned locals on there. :-)
