I know, wrong board, but see if I care.

Has anyone had any luck with getting information from the catholics?

Specifically, I want to track down the records for 1861 for St Phillips catholic orphanage in Kensington, London. No joy. I've emailed and written to the catholic churches in the area and also to the catholic FHS, but not even a reply. I said I would pray, but I think they knew I had my fingers crossed.

So my question is this. How do you extract information from them, or is it even possible to do this? Do you need a secret word or handshake?

Maybe you need to be catholic :-D

Or maybe they've been spying on these boards, read your threads and blacklisted you [conspiracy theory]

what a little imp you are!!!

any RC churches near you? if so, why not call in and ask someone in the clergy there if they can assist you

Hmm - as soon as they see I dont have a shadow they throw water at me.

I have done just that at the local church and the priest was really helpful.

He told me to contact the catholic fhs. Which I did without success.

Yes...The churches should be able to help as should the CFHS ......There are not too many about I am afraid. I too have problems finding records that only a visit to the church will reveal the entries :-(

'We got cured' :-S

Makes them sound like sides of ham........ :-D

I think you will have to approach the Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster. They have an archivist but are not, apparently, very forthcoming re records. Not like the Anglicans then......... :-D

thanks, I know about those sites, but I am specifically interested in this particular orphanage and its records in 1861. It was definitely catholic. The CFHS are no use at all, totally unhelpful. I wonder why the secrecy - whats to hide? Usually money talks but no, even offers of a large(ish) donation cut no ice.

I will try the LMA, thanks for that, I'd forgotten about them. They may actually give me a clue where to look if theres nothing there. Do they have independant researchers and has anyone used one? Recommendations?

Thanks again.
