:-S Why is it everyone is obsessed with face book, every TV programme someone has put there foot in it,upset someone, outraged someone and I see it with my own family sons there wives and teenage grandchildren all on face book, never a week goes by when one of them hasn't put something on there that's upset someone else in the family, it makes me soooooooooooo angry, is there know such thing as keeping certain things to ones self any more.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry Rant over :-|

Completely agree Gill, can't stand the thing.

Family historians of the future will hardly have to do any research about their ancestors - just find their old Facebook account and find their entirely life story in obsessive detail. :-D

I can't believe the personal stuff people put on there. And photos of themselves semi dressed!
I do like certain things on it though. I like a local group which shares photos and memories of my City. And a group I found for people sharing my maiden name.
But do wish friends would not report their every move during the day!

Hi Matthew,
I know the internet is a wonderful tool but really face book is one step to far, it's frightening what people reveal on there.

GillfromStaffs

GillfromStaffs Report 19 Nov 2011 14:40

As you say I have seen some very personal stuff on here as well, could never understand why people would want to share all there private info with anyone on the internet, apart from anything else it's dangerous.

Many of my sisters grown children are on face book as is our daughter and our grandsons wife. and grown children of my other siblings .
I joined cos i was invited but cant get along with it . i guess it may be like the equivalent of Genes chat for people that have no interest in family history, but with more personal stufff being posted than Genes chat would have

Each to their own I guess ;-)

Facebook is only as public as you allow it to be...so pics won't necessarily be seen by all and sundry if you don't want them to be.

I'm like Joy..I really enjoy facebook..it's a great way of keeping in touch with those who don't live close..AND it's unmoderated and unpoliced by folk who take offence easily. x

GillfromStaffs Report 19 Nov 2011 15:30

I agree with each to his own but personally I believe it's one of the most dangerous social networking sites on the internet and gives a forum to all sorts of troublemakers and worse !!!!!!!!
Know offence :-)

Silly Sausage Report 19 Nov 2011 15:46

I agree with Joy and Muffy I love FB its as personal as I want to make it ....I can choose whom I want on my FB list my account is private, I love the games I love the groups I love the gossip I love the fact I can rant or look for support.

I have never seen any trouble makers but if I did I would simply block them I have a large blocked list :-D

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 19 Nov 2011 15:46

you can set your security on facebook to friends only
so nobody can see anything you dont want them to see
and you can block people from even finding you
if thats what you want

its only as good as you set your sercurity levels
or you can leave it open and let all see everything
we have some fantastic fun nights having a laugh on there
when GR is running slow or broke
and if your on my friends list you know i value your friendship
because i am fussy who gets added

I love FB.

I find most people who dont like it dont really understand it.

I've seen more nastiness on this site than I've ever seen on FB.

Had a few crass foul mouth comments regarding my family from a contact this year on FB, but soon deleted & blocked her.

She even went as far as sending me a private message calling me a c you next Tuesday on a new account once she realised shed been blocked. So I blocked her new account as well. - NUTTER ! ;-)

Its a brilliant social tool if you use it wisely & the good outweighs the bad.. :-D

JoyBoroAngel Report 19 Nov 2011 15:54

even the GR staff man a page on facebook
and your more likely to get a quick reply on their facebook wall
than emailing the team on GR itself
funny how we have got to know some of their faces
behind their names to
i have had a few fun replys and a bit of banter with some of them
over the site been broke and asking them to keep it broke a bit longer
so i could paint wallpaper or DIY

Agree love Facebook. My daughter lives in SA so instead of the £200+ phone bills we can talk for free. Only half an hour ago youngest daughter put up picture of my grandchildren at a ball pit, instant viewing. As long as you only accept people you can trust, if not as Mildred said just bin lol

Thank's all for you replies,
interesting reading your experiences most have been more positive than mine, I must admit I did find it quite difficult to understand and after the weird emails I gave up. I just find it irritating when all you hear these days is "well she said this on Face book" or he said that, or I saw this on Face Book :-)

I agree with Mildred. It's a useful tool and I love to see photos of my cousins' children, for example, when normally, 300 miles apart, I wouldn't know them at all.

I agree you have to vet who you allow on your page. This comes with practice.

But what a fantastic way of catching up with old schoolfriends, people who have moved abroad, and of course seeing what the kids and their friends are up to!

And all for free.
