Hi Huia, I remember when the site creators used to post - Stephen Pankhurst was the one I remember posting on the original type of posts. He used to post under his name rather than "Genes" That account must have been created later as you spotted.

There are quite a few people who have been here longer than me and used to post more than I did back then. I think Lynda used to have a very old staff number.... didn't she join sometime in 2002?

Certainly on genes reunited's page on facebook, they were not aware of the correct year as it stated initially 2003 :-)

As somebody else pointed out, it was originally Genes Connected, so it probably changed to Genes Reunited in 2003.

Ah well, they are just trying to confuse us all with 'science'.

I'm not sure when I actually first joined Genes - but it was Genes Connected then and membership was free. One year, after the name change, I was notified that it was time to renew and it would cost (forget how much) and I believe that my membership may be counted from then. I have a printout of something from them and it's dated 2002 - so I feel that they are counting only from when we became financial members. I could be wrong. Don't quote me.

Ah Ta Berona - I have printouts as well from before I joined and one even has coloured pictures on it of the White Cliffs of Dover. Don't know what it is from have only found page two.

I didn't become a paying member for quite a while. I didn't see the point when there were so many excellent free genealogy sites around like Genforum (which was great back then before Ancetry took it over) I probably paid up in the January - don't know what made me do it but haven't looked back.

I joined and paid (about £5 I think) in March 2003 when it was Genes connected I have had no breaks in membership but at one stage after problems with the site we were given an extra month which shunted my membership date forward a month.

It was quite a while after that (2 or 3 years at least) before with much grumbling from members, they changed the name to Genes Reunited, It might even have been when they first sold out.
