..................................................to make personal comments to other people regarding their weight etc. I've also noticed that some people like to make disparaging comments if you tell them you've been on holiday - the common one being "Uh....it's alright for some people". What do you think?

I have got the comment 'yeah but you get a car, tax, insurance, road rescue and repairs are all paid for'. OK then you have my disability and you get the benefits and I get to skip around and work again without pain!

I was speaking to a lady who's family is a total nightmare. She spent 20 minutes telling me that I shouldn't let my daughter take advantage of me as a babysitter (she doesn't) and that my 28 y.o. son shouldn't be allowed to live with us and I certainly shouldn't be doing his washing etc. I think I'm too polite at times because I couldn't bring myself to tell her that she needed to look at her own family before making comment on anyone else's.

Oh and BTW - we've worked darn hard so we can go cruising:-))

Just got back from my holiday yesterday, being a pensioner , had to save up for it, these that say" it's alright for some" have the same opportunity as I have, so I would just ignore the remarks, like everyone I use my money for what I want, and appreciate that at 74 I can still get around do my own thing. I don't spend night in the pub, gambling or buying the latest technological gadgets, so I could'nt care less what others say. Vivienne

Well that's true smartypants Allan. Do you not agree though that it is annoying to be made to feel guilty if you are now getting the benefit of all those years of hard work?

As I said - it's also annoying to hear people make personal comments regarding weight, family issues etc. especially when they are not in a position to make such comments. Again I think I'm too polite at times in not telling them to mind their own business. Recently my mum mentioned to a neighbour that in the last week we had all been busy and she hadn't seen any of us. The neighbour immediately told her what she should be saying to us and said that she is tempted to ring me and let me know what she thinks of the family. My mother was mortified and rang me immediately to say she wasn't complaining she had just made a comment. I was very annoyed with the neighbour.

Sue, all joking to one side, I think that how people spend their money should be of no concern to anyone else.

I put it down to a form of jealousy. I know plenty of people wh regularly go to Bali. Personally, I wouldn't go there if you paid me, but I'll not criticise those who do go. It's their choice

I agree, Allan - on all points. Jealousy, how people spend their own money and Bali.

Another example. I told two acquaintences that one of my grandson had picked every leaf off a plant I have near the back door. I thought it was funny but a discussion was started between the two people about they would've been very angry with a) the child and b) the mum. One went on to say that her precious garden is out of bounds to her grandchildren and another said that she hoped that a new plant was bought to replace the one he wrecked. Both made it perfectly clear that I was allowing my grandchildren to get away with murder.

As for comments about weight, I have had a few snide remarks.
They have usually been from people who are not slim either!

On occasions, the words "mind your own business!" are appropriate.

Thanks Elizabeth - as I've said I think I'm too polite at times. Funny thing is - I can speak up at meetings etc. with no problem. It's just on a personal level that I have trouble.

Many people (including me at times) say it's alright for my Mum and isn't she lucky etc etc who does a world cruise each year aswell as at least another 3mths away.

The side they don't see is she worked all her life, so that she could have an easier retirement. Also my step father left her comfortably set up so that she had an income each year. It was supposed to be for both of them and with step-dad being younger by 12yrs they expected that to be the case. Jack died 16years ago now and my mum would give her cruises up tomorrow to have his company. Her health isn't great and her mobility is very limited and even the cruises doesn't ease her lonliness.
So yes she is lucky, but she would say the same of many of her age group who still have their husbands for company.

It's your shrub, your grandson - you can let him do what he wants/you find reasonable (or funny!) He must have a very good concentration span!!

I've got 4 dolls houses in various states of disrepair. Two of them my 2 year old grandson is allowed to play with - they're furnished with furniture I don't like, another one I'm in the early stages of 'doing up'- too dangerous for him to play with, the other one has lights in - definitely a no-no.
I have had comments like - 'He'll destroy them'. 'He's a boy and shouldn't be playing with dolls houses'. etc.

My reply:
He's learning hand/eye co-ordination
Patience
Spatial awareness
He knows what can and can't go into his mouth
Respect for other peoples posessions
Small things get lost if you're not careful
To be gentle.
He can be quiet playing with the house for half an hour! Not bad for a boisterous 2 year old!!

As for 'Being a boy and shouldn't be playing with doll's houses' - I bought him a sturdy plastic tea set for his birthday - so he'd leave his sister's alone.

When a neighbour made a nasty comment about my mum's weight (she was only a size 16 so not bad), mum had a good reply for her.

"When I'm old I might look like my mother (gran was very slim and had beautiful skin even in her 70's)

- but when you're old you might look like your mother" Her mother was no oil painting, stank to high heaven and had hair like Freddy Boswell.

That shut her up.

hi sue, recently when i went to see the neurologist re my MS he said did i exercise, i proudly told him i walked my dogs twice a day regardless of how much pain i was in, he said i bet there in good shape i said yes, he then said why are you so fat then, i felt my heart sink, not only do i struggle day to day but im only a 16 and never eat fried foods, apart from the odd bag of chips, and take up to 28 tablets a day, this has really got me down so much so ive told the hospitial i never want to see him again,normaly had it been anyone else i would have said how rude but you have the medical proffesion in high esteem well no longer, and yes i feel awakward telling anyone ive been away in the van youd think it was a crime.

I love that comment, Dianne - I may have to use my own version:-))

LPC - you obviously know what I'm saying. Some professionals think they have a licence to be rude.
