I have been thinking about the different types of benefits for different situations, like most of us think if you can work you should, but this is very naieve of me i know , but if your single and live in a flat or house how do they manage is it around 50-60 pound a week, i guess thats the incentive also to get another job if you have just lost one but i cant see how anyone could be comfortable on that , remember i live in a village and dont see a lot of what goes on in the outside world far away are the days when i lived in london

I Look at my brother and sil, they both work and are comfortably well off , some times they say there skint my skint is not having a penny literary theirs is probably down to there last hundred not including monies tied up in property and funds , it would be such a shock god for bid they need to depend on benefits for a while

Thinking back now kay that reminded me of a friend who lived in the next bedsit to me , she worked part time and benefits made her money so she could afford to pay the rent , that's 25 yrs ago now she struggled then, i don't see how someone single and not being in work can live the utilities alone would be about 40 a week including tv licence guess that leaves about 20 for food.
where i live there are very few jobs, young kids are now cleaners no disrespect but its strange to see young lads with a mop, is the job prospect different in bigger places

My sister reaches retirement age next year and has always worked since the age of 15.....never been out of work before!! She got made redundant just before xmas and has been existing....and yes I do mean existing....on JSA of £64.30 per week.

During the bad weather she was putting nearly £30 a week on her gas out of that £64........so don't believe all you read in the papers about benefit *scroungers*.........most people are in the same position as my sister....and it's really hard for them.

No, Kent.......they had snow there for weeks too......it wasn't only *up north* it snowed! ;-)))

When you're at home all day 'cos you've got no job to go to, you have to have heating on more :-(((

THE BEST KEPT SECRET

http://www.energychoices.co.uk/social-tariffs.html

all utility company's
now have to provide a social tarriff to people on certain benifits
but they dont tell you

Rosie, I'm also down south and my gas is £67 a month - and no I don't live in a mansion LOL......just a 3 bed semi. :-)))

Joy, many thanks for that site.....I've bookmarked it and will send it to my sis tomorrow.

The worst of it for my sis is that no-one is going to give her a job because of her age.....yes I know there is anti age discrimination but we all know employers can and do get around that ;-)))

they dont offer it to people puss
unless they ask for it thats not right really

it should be given automatic to people on low incomes

if you are in receipt of:
Child Tax Credit and salary is below £14,600
Working Tax Credit and salary lower than £14,600
Disability Living Allowance
Pension Credit
Attendance Allowance
War Disablement Pension
Disablement Pension
Child Tax Benefit
Income Support
Income Based Job Seeker Allowance
Carers Allowance
Severe Disablement Allowance

then you can ask to be put on the social tarriff
and i will save some up to £245 pounds a year
if you dont ask you wont get it if

I agree with you Rosie......she's got one of those key meters and I know they charge more for the gas through those, which is bad really 'cos you're paying up front for the gas, not like me on DD. But it's the only way she can manage her money otherwise she'd end up getting a bill that she just wouldn't be able to pay and having it cut off :-(((

I'm sure she will get used to living on such a reduced income eventually but it's hard when you've been used to living on a good salary to go down to just £64 a week.
