I agree with you Rosie......she's got one of those key meters and I know they charge more for the gas through those, which is bad really 'cos you're paying up front for the gas, not like me on DD. But it's the only way she can manage her money otherwise she'd end up getting a bill that she just wouldn't be able to pay and having it cut off :-(((

I'm sure she will get used to living on such a reduced income eventually but it's hard when you've been used to living on a good salary to go down to just £64 a week.

Rosie, I'm also down south and my gas is £67 a month - and no I don't live in a mansion LOL......just a 3 bed semi. :-)))

Joy, many thanks for that site.....I've bookmarked it and will send it to my sis tomorrow.

The worst of it for my sis is that no-one is going to give her a job because of her age.....yes I know there is anti age discrimination but we all know employers can and do get around that ;-)))

My sister reaches retirement age next year and has always worked since the age of 15.....never been out of work before!! She got made redundant just before xmas and has been existing....and yes I do mean existing....on JSA of £64.30 per week.

During the bad weather she was putting nearly £30 a week on her gas out of that £64........so don't believe all you read in the papers about benefit *scroungers*.........most people are in the same position as my sister....and it's really hard for them.

Thinking back now kay that reminded me of a friend who lived in the next bedsit to me , she worked part time and benefits made her money so she could afford to pay the rent , that's 25 yrs ago now she struggled then, i don't see how someone single and not being in work can live the utilities alone would be about 40 a week including tv licence guess that leaves about 20 for food.
where i live there are very few jobs, young kids are now cleaners no disrespect but its strange to see young lads with a mop, is the job prospect different in bigger places
