.............

Robin Hobbs aka Megan Lindholm ( author of fantasty fiction ) states that she saw the sea as a barrier to hold her in.

It made me wonder as others have seen it as a being to be conquered (sp) . or just crossed.

I love the sea, and most days would view it as a friend ....able to take me to new places, but never one to take the "P" out of incase it dumped you on the rocks.

I have a friend who is petrified of the sea, not just sailing on it but even being near it unless it is glass calm.

How do you feel.

Robin Hobb wrote some interesting novels based on the sea.

Artic great books I loved the Liveships madship was sad,

I was checking for any new books from her when I came across her quote about the sea. Made me wonder as I crossed it and still love it.

check out Megan Lindholm as she has books under that name.

I think most people would love the sea Uzzi......its a sort of primaeval thing.......after all it is where we all came from......

I think of the sea as being a never ending story......it was there at the birth of the planet and will be there when I am long gone......still endlessly washing the shores of the world......

love it, love it, love it.....

Merlin you are right in that calm its like a puppy to play with, in a storm its to be feared. It sounds as tho you respect it, do you fear crossing it ?

Ray

Ray Report 24 Apr 2009 18:45

I see the sea as ,something no bugger can build on,

so as not to spoil the view from my window,

How ever they are trying hard to shatter my view,

With those awful wind turbines on the horizon,,,lol

I see the sea as freedom, I look out at it and think of the world beyond it, the creatures swimming free in it.

Even when the sea is rough I find it very calming.

Sally the crab lol you love the sea, like me can't understand the fright of it, note fright not fear. I love sitting on the shore watching it in storm, but admit to being glad that I'm on shore and not on the waves.

LWH I would live happily on a boat, but it is more than just boats

Ray you are right in that no council can claim and build .......beware of offshore houseboats mind lol

Jax me and you are so alike.
I wish I could do more than snorkel but I can't deep dive unless I have a lump of metal around me.

Hello Uzzi.......what an interesting question to ask .

I've lived close to the sea for most of my life .I find it is a great settler of the mind ( in times of trouble and strife )....... it's the vastness and constancy that appeals to me.........from the shoreline that is.........lol

My OH has taken up sailing and I went out for the first time last year.I have NEVER been so scared in my life.We hit a bit of a squall as soon as we left the harbour.........I can tell you , the sea took on a whole different aspect for me at that moment.............I won't be going out there again !

Amanda.......enjoying from the shoreline.........lol

Even though I live close to the sea all my life im not a very strong swimmer.

Amanda, I had to think about it as I love the sea at least from the beach, but have always wondered what was beyond it ......an adventure so was surprised to read that an author who writes fantasy about the water actually felt it was a barrier to stop her moving about. can't say I blame you for retreating to the shoreline.

Ray you live by the sea you understand the respect it needs, not as a person but as a being who treated wrong will take your life,

LWH many people who can swim don't like the sea, but learn to swim as there is nothing better than floating on calm also it may save your life one day

Sally Report 24 Apr 2009 19:12

Yes Uzzi, and like my Dad who was brought up by the sea, would love to live near it again.......my Mum and Dad and Sister and BiL got their wish......but we are inland and don't want to move away from our children and grandchildren.....

My Grandad, the Coastguard and sailor, and sailor Uncles always had a deep respect of the sea.......and my Dad said that as boys they were always told to respect the sea and its dangers.......I love the sea in bad weather, and foolishly perhaps, enjoyed a particularly awful channel crossing in winter where the ferry was at 35 degrees to the horizon....lol....

Jax the strongest swimmer would lose against a storm, but at least you can stay afloat, easier to do if you are not frightened of water.

I don't come from the coast so my fasination with the sea is weird ( no comments).
The thread came about cos I didn't realise how different people might view that expanse of water.

I REALLY REALLY miss the sea.I grew up a few minutes walk from the beach and spent many of my childhood years down there.I loved it in the summer ,but also loved the big waves in winter storms. The smell and taste of the air .The seagulls crying, and scrabbling around in the rock pools not realising that the tide was coming in,and having to run .
I now live in the middle of the country and I think a good 2 to 2and half hours from the sea.
I am going to have a week in Suffolk in June and the cottage is just off the beach,so am really looking forward to that.

Sally as the granddaughter of a coastguard I can only imagine the respect you have had told you.
What stories you must have had, do you know about the houses with the widows walk and the stories about the candles burning.
But still you enjoy it.
I understand your need to be inland but will hope that you get back to the coast where I think you wish to be.

Awww`Helen sorry to hear you miss it but maybe 1 day. I thought I was the only person that smiled at the damn noise of those pesky birds lol.
Don't hear them here much but I still smile when I do.

Helen enjoy your time there,
For you the sea is happy memories of past times , most are hols you lived there. Do you want to go back for the memories or for the shoreline ?
