Hi Irish Girl ,Shimms and everyone

My Osteoporosis is mainly in the lower Limbs at the moment, Hips and legs. The hips give me the most trouble. Getting comfortable in bed at night was my main problem.
I have solved that to a degree now thanks to a GR member. They advised me to buy a Mattress Topper for my bed and it has made a world of difference to me. It cushions the Hip area and doesn't put any pressure on the Hips. I swear by them and now I get a good nights sleep.

Good luck with your tests Irish Girl. You have nothing to worry about it's dead easy and doesn't hurt a bit

Regards
Jackie

I didn't really want to say anything here in public, yet tis when I broke first one foot, then the other ... my hand/wrist too that they discovered I have it to a degree. The latest is it's now suspected I may have it in my jawbone, have to protect my face at all costs if I fall.

No Sylvia, you didnt mention trust, i was just saying that we do tend to trust our GP, we go for advice and treatment and take what they say at face value

If we didnt then we wouldnt go to them would we?

Ohhh my mistake, sorry

Alko

Alko Report 4 Mar 2009 14:26

I think we all trust our GP's Sylvia never think that a tried and tested drug would do us harm,

we take their word as gospel, i certainly have in the past

Okie dokie Merlin hunni, understand what you are saying but :_

these drugs are very potent however, the body only absorbs a small amount of the drugs, and then ,

which is why they have to be taken on an empty stomach to ensure maximum absorbency

Googloe up Osteoporosis Society. you should find out most of what you want to know on that sight, one thing though, read the small print on all drugs they give you for side effects, they can be rather nastyand dangerous to you. **M**.

HI Irish Girl
Yes I have Osteoporosis. I had to have a Bone Density Scan after breaking my foot to find this out.. It was a type of sliding machine I went through and not an actual Tunnel. Not sure what they call it though.
I take Actonel Combi D for my Osteoporosis. it consists of a Fizzy drink that you take 6 days a week and then on the 7th day in the morning a Tablet. You can't lie down after taking the tablet or have food or drink of any kind for 30 minutes as can cause stomach problems so I usually go and make my beds and have a shower and then have my coffee. So far so good for me on it. I haven't had any side affects.
Hope this helps

Have a nice day

Jackie

Hi Irish girl.

My job is a fracture liason nurse................... I specialize in osteoporosis.
Jen is right................... it is a DEXA scan that you will have .................... this is not like an MRI or CT scan where the tunnels are used . you will lay on a couch and they will use low dose x-rays to determine your bone density. They usually check your hips and spine as these are the most common sites for severe osteoporotic fractures.
If you are found to have a low bone density, your risk of fracturing a hip is significantly increased.
The good news is that this can be easily resolved with bone sparing therapy................ this consists of tablets that are taken once a week (Alendronate). You may also be given a calcium and vitamin D supplement. Of couse it is important to get plenty of calcium in your diet too.
Hope this is of some help.
Please feel free to Pm me if you have any questions.
Luv Daisy
