A nice lady suggested I ask you for some advice ..... well actually it was Christmas Belle lol

There is an icon suddenly appeared in my taskbar .... it is for winweb security ..... I checked this out and have discovered it is a clone of another security website ..... it is usually attached to a trojan virus apparently....

I looked at the instructions for how to manually remove winweb but fell at the first hurdle .... it does not show up in the programmes when I go into the control panel .....

I then did a search for it - and again there was nothing found .... but I keep getting boxes popping up asking me to activate in order to get rid of viruses .... or boxes asking me to update .....

Have you any idea of how I might get rid of this very annoying icon please .......

I don't know if Errol is still on GR, as he/she went off GR a while ago and then came back on again later but since that I haven't see any posts or mention of Errol at all.

I really wish Erroll was still on GR though!!!

Hi Ann,
Do you have Norton 360 security installed on your PC?

If so this should be on your desk top. Open it, hover cursor over PS Security, from the list provied, click on Run scans, pick Comprehensive Scan & click on go. Hopefully this, or if you have a different security program, should remove this little beastie.

Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve, I don't have norton security ... I have the avg 8 free edition .... It is currently running a scheduled scan .... will check results when it has finished ... but somehow I don't think it will get rid of this persistent little thing.

Will report back later :(

Thanks both, will try spybot when scan finished, if AVG doesn't work ....

Hi All,
Little Anns problem prompted me to check my security updates. Despite set for daily auto install, it hadn't done so for 6 wks. Checked my PC for security updates at the Windows Security Centre via control panel. Found 17 updates required. Took half an hr to upload etc (mobile internet connection slow).

Ann I'd recommend that you check that your security software have latest updates.

Steve.

Budgie, I am looking into alternative security at the moment ....

my problem with this winweb is that I have searched my laptop and cannot find it located anywhere ... hence the difficulty in removing it ...

Steve I have already done that .... as I said, I can't even locate the infected file/programme - It is clearly hidden somewhere as I am continuously getting messages to activate winweb etc ..........

Ann

first of all because you have not actually installed the rogue program that the pop up is asking you to it wont show up using the usual methods stated.

Now as it stands your compute is not infected with anything nasty, if you like this is the same as a bit of junk mail thats come through your letter box, but the idea is to scare you into buying a rubbish program.

So to find and get rid of the pop up you will need to download a program called Hijack This

Can i PM you with instructions ?

Sxx

Hi Ann,
You've probably already looked at this on the 2Spyware.com site.
