I talk less on msn than I used to since I moved,
and haven't been on here as much either, getting settled in really...

Hoff, it is good if you can use it to talk to family....I know my brother finds it very useful to keep in touch with his son in Aus'.....

I wonder what I used to do without the internet and all the applications that came with it. For instance, what did I used to do at work before e mail? I know - dictate a letter, check the letter, send it back for corrections, sign the letter, wait two days for it to be delivered............

and at the other end, someone had to dictate a reply, check the reply etc etc

Or alternatively, perhaps a phone call - to someone who was invariably out. Leave a message. Message returned while I was ....out.

So, it's speeded up communications that way.

And on a personal level, do you remember when you had to queue at the bank for ever little thing? Now I do the whole shooting match on line at a time to suit me.

Shopping - easy. No need to spend time actually going to Tesco any more.

And this whole family tree stuff has been revolutionised. I spent some time last week with the mother of a friend who's been doing her family tree for literally decades. She was amazed at the amount of information available via (whispers) Ancestry. In fact, she solved a couple of very long standing puzzles in her tree at the literal push of a key.

I've also made a really good friend who I've yet to meet but who I "write" to regularly, ust through this site

And finally, without the internet, I would never have been found by the half brother I never even knew existed.

So, from the point of view of this 50 odd year old, it's been wonderful.

I don't use msn or facebook.......but I do like the fact that I keep in touch with my cousins by e-mail .

I use the internet to research lot's of things....it's just like a really really big book but it doesn't gather as much dust : )

Hi Sue, well like you I know without the internet I would never have got even a fraction of the family tree info I now have, found some living rellies ...and some very good friends :)

i never shop online..only for books, i like to see what iam buying....lol

She shouldn't have been chatting on the Internet while she was supposed to be teaching. I'm surprised she had time. Certainly when I taught in a primary school there were no peaceful moments from the time we came in until about an hour after the kids went home......and we did regular playground duties in our "break times".

As for how long to use it at home well I'd be in trouble if limited to 3 hours!

I've got a laptop in the sitting room which I love.

I put it on to look at while I have a morning coffee. Then it goes off until I stop for a cup of tea mid afternoon.

It comes on in the evening when I'm home (I'm frequently out several evenings a week) then stays on until I go to bed. I often use it and watch TV at the same time or sometimes concentrate on TV and just glance to see what is going on in the various groups I belong to.

My computer is great and through it I keep in touch with people all over the world, do genealogy of course and a lot of my work comes via the Internet.

I agree with you Stella, when I'm shopping for something special (shoes.......)

But there's a limit to the number of times I need to see a jar of Nescafe!

Plus On-line Tescos has a few perks - eg if you order, say, a 250ml of something and they don't have it in the local store, they send you the next size up at no extra cost.

All this and no driving, no parking, no buying things you had no intention of buying until you see them. Way to go!

i havent been able to drive my car for 6 weeks..i just cant wait to get out driving and shopping and meeting people again.... much more important than the pc...

I agree with Sue no she shouldnt have been chatting on the net. I use the net for work but can only access some sites I cant get hotmail or FB, but can GR but on my breaks..
