Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 28 Sep 2008 03:53

Hey Anne, I remember that, was really scary, wasn't it?

During the night, I have had a few crises to cope with alone on here sometimes or just me and another person trying to help someone.... people do their best in good faith and let's hope it's always like that.

I only get annoyed occasionally and usually try and stay off dodgy threads, can't be doing with silly people arguing. Life's too short and I live with a Mr Angry so don't want it here too.

McAnne's Gahan-Crazy Report 27 Sep 2008 23:26

Kaz

Your earlier post has reminded me of another incident on here........

A member who lived in Northern Ireland where there had been a flare up of local unrest - she had riots going on at the end of her road ........

We lost contact with her and concern mounted - and by an amazing feat of pooling of ideas and resources members here finally suceeded in securing a call to her house by the authorities to check on her.

As it turned out, fortunately all was well and she was very touched by the trouble folk had gone to.

These are the genuine 'crisis' that could so easily be ignored for the sake of a carelessly thought out joke ..............

Anyway - enough said - goodnight :O)

Kaz ,you do make sense, the thing with Chat /General is that we cannot and will not know for sure what is real or not.

Its all about anonimity, people lose their inhibitions when they are on the interweb, knowing that they can get away with being far more offensive than they can be in real life.
I think I can tell now when a thread has got out of control by the rapid number of responses, which are generally deleted by morning. A good fight will always attract more response then a nice one... human nature !

McAnne's Gahan-Crazy Report 27 Sep 2008 23:11

Well Helen

as i said - i was not *angry*

but i took the crisis at face value as did many others ...................

the next time it could be for real and no one will bother to help and that would be a real shame i think

Sue ,I agree.People interpret things in different ways. You never hear the tone of a persons voice on here,so sometimes it is difficult to distinguish the way things are intended.

JustKaz Report 27 Sep 2008 23:07

i saw the thread just before it got deleted, so had all the mixed emotions from, omg hope ok to thats ok its just a joke....

thing is with posts like that, we did have a genuine medical emergancy on here earlly part of this year, a dear member started to have heart palputations and everyone waited on the thread to make sure the ambulance arrived and we all found out next day everything was ok.

so you see when threads go up as a windup and then mock others which help, unless your privy or psychic to non emergencies, how you supposed to know. it could stop genuine help.. :(

its taken me ages to write this out hope it makes sense ... lol

take care kaz xxx

The problem with the written word is there is rarely any indication of the underlying emotion.

Just think of any sentence and try saying it aloud in several different ways. You can alter entire meanings sometimes by the tone of voice and you can express a lot of your personality.

One example I can think of is my grandmother who was very opinionated (even on subjects about which she knew little). She'd look at my mother doing something and say "Oh you do it like that do you?" with a tone of voice which meant she wouldn't dream of doing it in that way.

On the Internet and in the confines of forums and chat rooms we have little space or time to really talk. We often use shorthand methods of expressing ourselves and the simple written words can be accidentally interpreted very wrongly.

There are also unfortunately on some sites people who enjoy a kind of power they get from stirring things up. Many of us may have been in chatrooms where an individual thinks he or she can rule the roost and uses sarcasm to intimidate others.

We also need to remember that many of us use one form of Instant Messaging or another and there could be messages going back and forth of which we have no knowledge.

I was in a chatroom a few years back and it turned out that a rather unpleasant member was sending nasty messages about others secretly. This became obvious when she got careless and accidentally sent something unkind about someone to the victim instead of her buddie as intended.

Some people are what are known as Internet Trolls and look for every opportunity to cause strife.

Mc Anne ,yes I think we are talking the same thing!
At first I was a bit concerned but then I realised it was a joke. Then I thought this is just the computer!!!!!!Nothing I could do anyway.
I don't get cross on here as it does no good!

Can I just say that one of the main problems is that we don't get any non verbal signals through this medium and that it happens to all these types of site.
For me nothing winds me up but sometimes I thing I need to provide additional information so that peeps can think something from a slightly different perspective.
