Just came off the phone to my Dad.

A few days ago, he went to Enfield Crem to lay flowers at my step mums name plaque (her ashes were scattered)

On arriving he found it missing, looked into the bushes etc.

Spoke to a woman who works at the crem who said that apparently, quite a few name plaques have been stolen, one from here and there. Apparently they are sold for the metal value.

Dad, now on a pension has forked out £35 for an acrylic one to stop this happening again.

To say I'm disgusted is an understatement. Even more disgusted with the cretin who accepts these metal objects to melt down..They must know they are stolen ?

Apparently the stealing of such items are getting more common place, as its difficult to catch the culprits !

I saw something about the theft of metal on Sky News yesterday Mildred......and the police were busy checking scrapyards.....they were saying that one village had all its manholes pinched......how dangerous is that.......we have an iron gate, so I suppose that will disappear at some time....

What a rotten thing to happen to your Dad......and what sort of evil cretin would desecrate a grave......wishing them to rot in hell......scum.....

AnnCardiff Report 10 Jul 2008 11:05

the answer to this is in the hands of the dealers - when they are offered things like memorial plaques, or manhole covers, or war memorial plaques, they well know that these are stolen goods - in my opinion they are worse than the thieves who took the stuff in the first place, cos if it wasn't for the dealers they would be worthless. Crack down hard on scrap dealers

Roxanne Report 10 Jul 2008 11:10

Thats True Ann,The people who deal in it are worse than those who do the stealing!

Jac Report 10 Jul 2008 11:14

Elaine - have you or your dad asked at the Crematorium about compensation for his loss? They should have something in place and at the very least should have some sort of security in place. It is their responsibility to ensure that no vandals/thieves frequent the place. It's quite difficult to remove a name plaque and would have taken some time.

It doesnt surprise me though that thieves are at work pinching name plaques - flowers go missing from graves, floral tribute areas at crematoria etc. and I have know jewellery go missing from the deceased whilst laying in the chapel of rest. Some rotten human beings in this world.

Hi Jac

I think the name plate is a small one which sits on the ground, Dad said they are heavy to move hence why one is taken at a time it seems.
Knowing my dad, he wont ask for compensation, he wont make a fuss he's rather let it go & carry on :o((

Apparently the crem here in Harlow has seen some vandalism, trouble is they are such vast places its difficult to spot thief from mourners tending plots.

I'm absolutely horrified. These people are beneath contempt.

My brother's grave has had things stolen from it before, and it just makes you wonder - why? I am at a total loss, just can't comprehend it. It's painful enough losing someone so close, but to have this sort of thing happen, is just, well, there are no words to describe it.

I am, however, a believer in Karma. What goes around....

My VERY best wishes to you and Dad

What a load of b......s. What is this country coming to, when you rob the dead.

A lot of Churches have to be shut also, because people are going in stealing things. You cant go in for a quiet prayer.

Deanna Report 10 Jul 2008 12:44

Elaine, I am so sorry that your poor dad had to have this experience.
It must have been very painful for him.

this has been happening a lot , across the country.
On the news last night they spoke of a soldiers plaque which had been stolen and had to be replaced by a plastic one.
we said then that if they (the news casters) can 'pick out' a soldiers grave... then how many others is this happening to?

you are right.... the ones who do it are 'scum'.... but there is no word fit for the ones who buy them.

Words can't express my feelings at the lack of respect these days for mankind!

I call these scum 'the devil's own' and God forgive me but hope they reap what they sow.

Every day there are stories about the harm done to innocents, and then learn the bad are helped and the victims are just offered empty promises, not good enough!!

McAnne's Gahan-Crazy Report 10 Jul 2008 12:58

Been happening round this way for the past 2 years ................

Metal has risen extortionately in price and thus the scrap value which is why they do it.

You'll notice the increase in churches losing roof lead again also ............
