Absolutely dispicable. There are no words to describe people who are capable of this kind of act.

My heart goes out to your Dad, Elaine.

Disgraceful! read about another war memorial disappearing this morning, the local authority are going to replace it with an acrylic replica. But hang on a tick, if these things are ending up in scrap yards and one or two have been found there its time to get tough on not only the thieves but also the scrap yard owners

Elaine, I'm sorry to read about this, it is beyond me how anyone can be so low as to steal a memorial plaque, it's even more beyond me for anyone to purchase it to melt done for scrap value,
What is this country coming to when even a memory of dearly loved one isn't sacred any more.

So sorry to hear this Elaine but it is happening all over the country. scrap is worth money. The low lifes will take anything. In our local paper yesterday there is a story about the police in our region having a crackdown at scrap yards. On Monday 10 people were arrested, 5 vehicles were seized, 3 skips containing suspected stolen metal were seized. 7 of the arrests were on suspicion of metal theft. 2 were people wanted on warrants & 1 was a disqualified driver. The police were working on automatic number plate recognition technology. Maybe they should post a policeman on duty at all scrapyards.

I think they found the plaques from the war memorial again in a scrap yard.

Been happening round this way for the past 2 years ................

Metal has risen extortionately in price and thus the scrap value which is why they do it.

You'll notice the increase in churches losing roof lead again also ............

Words can't express my feelings at the lack of respect these days for mankind!

I call these scum 'the devil's own' and God forgive me but hope they reap what they sow.

Every day there are stories about the harm done to innocents, and then learn the bad are helped and the victims are just offered empty promises, not good enough!!

Elaine, I am so sorry that your poor dad had to have this experience.
It must have been very painful for him.

this has been happening a lot , across the country.
On the news last night they spoke of a soldiers plaque which had been stolen and had to be replaced by a plastic one.
we said then that if they (the news casters) can 'pick out' a soldiers grave... then how many others is this happening to?

you are right.... the ones who do it are 'scum'.... but there is no word fit for the ones who buy them.

What a load of b......s. What is this country coming to, when you rob the dead.

A lot of Churches have to be shut also, because people are going in stealing things. You cant go in for a quiet prayer.

I'm absolutely horrified. These people are beneath contempt.

My brother's grave has had things stolen from it before, and it just makes you wonder - why? I am at a total loss, just can't comprehend it. It's painful enough losing someone so close, but to have this sort of thing happen, is just, well, there are no words to describe it.

I am, however, a believer in Karma. What goes around....

My VERY best wishes to you and Dad

Hi Jac

I think the name plate is a small one which sits on the ground, Dad said they are heavy to move hence why one is taken at a time it seems.
Knowing my dad, he wont ask for compensation, he wont make a fuss he's rather let it go & carry on :o((

Apparently the crem here in Harlow has seen some vandalism, trouble is they are such vast places its difficult to spot thief from mourners tending plots.

Jac

Jac Report 10 Jul 2008 11:14

Elaine - have you or your dad asked at the Crematorium about compensation for his loss? They should have something in place and at the very least should have some sort of security in place. It is their responsibility to ensure that no vandals/thieves frequent the place. It's quite difficult to remove a name plaque and would have taken some time.

It doesnt surprise me though that thieves are at work pinching name plaques - flowers go missing from graves, floral tribute areas at crematoria etc. and I have know jewellery go missing from the deceased whilst laying in the chapel of rest. Some rotten human beings in this world.

Thats True Ann,The people who deal in it are worse than those who do the stealing!

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 10 Jul 2008 11:05

the answer to this is in the hands of the dealers - when they are offered things like memorial plaques, or manhole covers, or war memorial plaques, they well know that these are stolen goods - in my opinion they are worse than the thieves who took the stuff in the first place, cos if it wasn't for the dealers they would be worthless. Crack down hard on scrap dealers
