Hahaha. I will take your advise about putting a cover over him at night, We do put him in the shed when we go to bed and next morning bring him out again before we go to work and school, he sometimes starts about 5 in the morning whistling etc and i'm sure he can hear when i unlock the door to go to the shed. Whats the best treat to give him,?

My aunt called her African Grey - Sue. My aunt was the matron of an old peoples home and Sue's cage was in the bay window of the very large dinning area. The residents had to walk through the dining area from the television room to their own bed quarters.

Sue would often shout "Nurse, Nurse, I'm wet, I'm wet" (yes you know what I mean!) and the nurses would come running to help only to find a bird looking at them from her cage. lol......so many times that happened!

Joe uses to sing "whato Joe, what do you know, I've just come back from the Rodeo"

My dad always said it to him when he was putting his slippers on after coming in from work every day. Joe picked it up.

If anyone was laughing in the room, Joe would join in sniggering from his cage.

He used to nip anyone who put their fingers into his cage - except me. For some reason, he loved me and I used to put my hole hand in and stroke him, he used to hold my finger and lick it. If I tickled his head, his pupils in his eyes used to go big and small repeatedly.

Wow Doc, Have you always lived in Aussie?

When we moved 5 weeks ago i did actually apologise to the neighbours about Lucky being so noisy, they said it was lovely to hear a different noise and they love shouting to him over the fence, He always answers back in his own way.

There is nothing like animals and birds doing funny things to make me laugh like the boxer dogs barking at the door etc hilarious

we have a german shep, when she hears the sound of food being prepared she makes an awful whining noise, and the bird has picked itup, I don't know who is doing the noise now.

OH Report 22 May 2008 13:51

Try not to teach the bird word directly, just talk as you would normally around him, at night put a cover over him, they are night sleepers and tend to bed down early evening, he will still pick up words with the cover on.

:) still smiling :)

my aunt and uncle used to have one and he would mimic the sound of their creaky door. they also had two boxer dogs who would jump up and bark at the sound everytime without fail. it was an hilarious scene to watch! he also made a noise which sounded quite a lot like a laugh which was infectious!.

I used to have an African grey parrot. so did my uncle, and so did my aunt. My uncle and I had a male, my aunt a female.

Usually the female is bigger (in african greys) not so sure about your parrot though.

My grey (Joe) was an excellent talker... swear words the lot! lol.

He used to sit in his cage in the bay window of our front room and wolf wistle the old ladies passing in the street...I'm laughing now just remembering them looking round to see where it was coming from! he he!

Got my Dad's voice down to the tee. He also picked up my mum saying "Jackie (my sister), shut the bloody door!)

my brother used to throw bits of seed at him, and he would dodge and laugh. Then one day, after his food dish had been topped up - he sat on the edge of it, got a foot full and threw it back at my bro...serves him right!

We used to give him lollie sticks and he would lick the flavouring off it then shred it into splinters.

There was a ring inside the top of the cage which he used to hand on and swing from side to side going tick tock as he did it.

He was a lovely bird....I really missed him when he died!

When I put my car away at night, he whispers to me,

"What you doing"

very soft because is dark and he knows he should be asleep.

I think it lovely to hear them trying to mimic humans, if you don't take any notice of him for a while he also shouts his name 'Lucky' for some attention.

Some birds can be very clear, I went to a garden nursery and in the front area at entrance was this monumental structure of a bird cage, and I heard the voice saying "Hello", I looked around and saw no one, it was repeated a few times before I noticed this bird making it's way dow the wire of the cage,
it was a long bill Corella, another aussie cockatoo.
It was so clear I though it was a man saying hello to me.
