Hi everyone, after inheriting a beautiful Rosella Parrot a few years ago it has suddenly dawned on me that i don't know if its male or female, how do i tell??? He has been in an aviary with the other budgies but we have recently moved house, given all the budgies away and kept the parrot. He has really started to "talk" now and loves it if you chat to him. Thanks x

LOL

Budgies have a different coloured bit above their beaks to mark males and females.

Some parrots have to be seen by a vet to tell the difference.................something to do with a probe!

Soooooo glad I'm not a parrot! lol

Generally the male in the animal and bird and insect world is much stronger in colour, Rosella would be strong with reds and blue tips and the female I think is paler with greyish green feathers.

Did anyone see the scene in 'Carry On Camping ' where i think it was a minor bird said something very naughty?? well my middle child is trying to teach him that, can't wait to see if he says it. it would be hilarious.

But over all that, it is only the male that will mimic talk and sound.

Teresa L.A. Report 22 May 2008 13:19

That's it then he is deff male. He only talks to me and the kids tho and doesn't like O.H for some reason. Wonder why? His favourite word at the moment is "Hello" and it sounds so clear. lovely.

OH Report 22 May 2008 13:25

Some birds can be very clear, I went to a garden nursery and in the front area at entrance was this monumental structure of a bird cage, and I heard the voice saying "Hello", I looked around and saw no one, it was repeated a few times before I noticed this bird making it's way dow the wire of the cage,
it was a long bill Corella, another aussie cockatoo.
It was so clear I though it was a man saying hello to me.

I think it lovely to hear them trying to mimic humans, if you don't take any notice of him for a while he also shouts his name 'Lucky' for some attention.

When I put my car away at night, he whispers to me,

"What you doing"

very soft because is dark and he knows he should be asleep.

I used to have an African grey parrot. so did my uncle, and so did my aunt. My uncle and I had a male, my aunt a female.

Usually the female is bigger (in african greys) not so sure about your parrot though.

My grey (Joe) was an excellent talker... swear words the lot! lol.

He used to sit in his cage in the bay window of our front room and wolf wistle the old ladies passing in the street...I'm laughing now just remembering them looking round to see where it was coming from! he he!

Got my Dad's voice down to the tee. He also picked up my mum saying "Jackie (my sister), shut the bloody door!)

my brother used to throw bits of seed at him, and he would dodge and laugh. Then one day, after his food dish had been topped up - he sat on the edge of it, got a foot full and threw it back at my bro...serves him right!

We used to give him lollie sticks and he would lick the flavouring off it then shred it into splinters.

There was a ring inside the top of the cage which he used to hand on and swing from side to side going tick tock as he did it.

He was a lovely bird....I really missed him when he died!
