I would love the people in the doctors' surgery I go to taking the time to chat. They bark out questions and grunt when asked anything. Surely some people bruise no matter how you do the job?

Oh dear!
As someone who bruises dreadfully after giving blood taken by nurses at practice, nurses in hospitals, doctors at practice and doctors in hospital - think thats a bit rich (coming from your GP that is).
Surely some people are just prone to bruising easily?

I also have veins that disappear - in fact you would think I have none at all when the needles start appearing! LOL

Take no notice - if they want to have you retrain and waste their money let them. As you say they get paid a lot of money - and as I work at one of the PCT's know the kind of money they get.

Blimey Ros,

I have collapsed veins , low BP and bradycardia and have INR tests every week, my nurse know my arms very well and I can have really hellish bruises if she had to crochet with my elusive veins.

I certainly don't blame her for it.

I have very deep veins and the left arm/inner elbow is the only vein that blood can be got from .I ALWAYS bruise when blood is taken no matter who does it. Was a blood donor for many years and always bruised.
I,m one of those people that can brush something a bit hard and get a bruise cos my circulation is a bit sluggish.
Surely your GP must know it all people have different tolerances.

Sorry to hear you aren't happy.

Just a thought though........over the past 13 years my husband has had numerous blood tests and blood transfusions. Certain doctors and nurses have been much better at finding his veins than others. None as good as the phlebotomists who have done tests when he has checkups. There is definitely a knack to it and if retraining might mean some patients don't get bruised then perhaps it would be worth it.

I think one of the problems in surgeries is they don't have as much time to do the blood tests as they might take in a haematology department. There they use heat pads held on the veins for a few minutes to help find them.

Hope you feel happier soon.

Best way to P... them O,,,,,.

Do the retraining without complaint and offer to do something else too that will enhance your skills- can they pay?

Carry on talking to your patients and ask them to complete a patient satisfaction survey (create one of your own) and present it to your bosses as part of your development. (you may also learn things about yourself.)

I know you feel down about this but be confident in how you deal with it rather than PO'd that way you will always have the upper hand.

Take it from one who knows. (NHS worker- admin manager!!)

Rosalyn
they used to put a heat pad on daughter too but sometimes was still a problem and took several attempts to get a suitable vein that wouldn't collapse. was VERY important not to put the chemo in unless it could complete cos that would cause BIG problemes. Her last chemo session took 5!!! attempts and an anaesthetist to get a vein for the chemo, and this was in Hospital.so its not a straightforward procedue no matter what they think.
I dont care if i bruise as long as i dont feel the needle go in in the first place.

Good luck Ros, you don't need hassle at work, wonder what the gps will do when all the patients complain when you go. Will be too late then, they will realise they didn't appreciate a good worker, one who can chat and put people's minds at ease etc.
Take care, take a deep breath....

Hi Ros, I wonder how long it is since the GP took blood himself? Sometimes I bruise and sometimes i don't. I wonder if the patients who bruised were on blood thinning drug such as aspirin? I believe you bruise more easily then. How did he know about the bruises? Did the patients complain?

Why not take the training if they pay, any training is good, and any other that is on offer, then the new GP you go to will benefit. best always to turn criticism around to your advantage. Good luck
But don't give up your job while you need it, try and stick it out until the other one is available.
