My daughter and OH had three children through IVF after trying to have a baby for years. The hurt caused by people asking and the assumption that she was too interested in her career and earning money was immense. She was always polite but one day it got too much so she went into full detail of all the procedures she had had to find out why she wasn't falling pregnant. It shut this person up and nothing was said again. We thank God for our beautiful grandchildren but anyone who does not have children by choice should be left alone. No-one's business but their own.

Miss Manners has alternative responses:

1. Smile sweetly and say "How kind of you to take an interest". No more.

2. Look pleasant (or cold, your choice) but puzzled, and say: "Why do you ask?"

It must be awful to want children and not have been able to have them, and get this from strangers. The question is rude to start with, unless it's from someone with a genuine reason to be interested in *you* who knows the interest is welcome. It's just cruel when it's put to someone in that situation; and how would a casual acquaintance know otherwise?

You have a baby when you want one, if you want one. it is nothing to do with anyone else as they are not going to be the one looking after and providing for the baby.

I feel exactly the same. I started my current job in April last year and because my hubby already worked at this place, the assumption was it wouldnt be long before I would be pregnant....erm no! For the last 12 months, I have had nothing but When are you having children then, your nearly 30 now.

I had a couple of days off sick last November with stomach cramps......I came back to about 10 people asking when it was due!! I have been to the doctors today....came back to pick up hubby....one person asked me if I had been for a pregnancy test.

I do want children but I keep telling people that not for another few years until I have paid off some debt.

You know, people were always asking my mum when she was going to have children from the time she got married at 25. As it happens, she can't have kids so ten years later she and Dad adopted me and then later my sister, but people are so nosy.

And I have an aunty who has been asking me if I have got a boyfriend yet since I was 15! One of these days I'm going to tell her I just have a bad habit of fancying people who don't fancy me so would she mind not rubbing it in, please?

Funny thing is, on the flip side, there were raised eyebrows thirty-four years ago when my dad's sister in law gave birth to her fourth baby, five years and twelve days after the eldest! Apparently there was a lot of whispering amongst the family about that.

I must have been lucky because I've never been asked/questioned/nagged about the children issue - good job really because my reply wouldn't be very polite!

It is a rude question I think. Its ok to say ' have you got children' but not to ask when you will have them and if!!
