Stepfather remanded over images

Mr Meehan faced charges of possessing indecent images
The stepfather of former missing schoolgirl Shannon Matthews has been remanded in custody over charges of possessing indecent images of children.

Craig Meehan, 22, of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, was arrested at the family home on Wednesday and appeared before the town's magistrates on Thursday.

He was accused of 11 specimen charges of possessing indecent images graded at levels one to four of seriousness.

Prosecutors alleged there were 140 indecent images on two computers.

No application for bail was made at the hearing.

Shannon, nine, was missing for 24 days after failing to return from school.

Packed courtroom

Michael Donovan, 39, of Lidgate Gardens, Dewsbury, has been charged with her kidnap.

Friends of the Matthews family packed the courtroom to listen to the allegations against Mr Meehan.

The bespectacled stepfather wore a black Manchester United shirt with the name Ronaldo on the back and spoke only to confirm his name, address and age.

He stood to listen as magistrate Wayne Perriman remanded him in custody.

I don't think Shannon will go back to the family home in the foreseeable future.

There had to be a good reason why she was not returned home within a day or two of being found and this arrest seems like a good reason to me.

Strange that Shannon had to go missing so this could come out, wonder what they found on any other computers taken for examination? Now maybe we know why Shannon wasn't happy to go home . Her mother apparently has a two year old by this lowlife, and some of her other children live with their father, as does Shannon's brother live with Shannon's Dad.
I think this woman needs to learn to put her kids in front of her sex life and stays single for a while to nurture them all through this.

Far too many women lurch from one relationship to another, producing more children each time and then wonder why their own kids don't cope well with life. I know how hard it is to be a single mum but if you can't cope alone, don't keep having more children.

All I can say on this matter is, thank god Meeham doesn't have children of his own, well I hope he doesn't.
The mother needs to step back and think about her children before letting another guy move in with the family, but then I'm sure S Services will make sure she adheres to the rules, I hope all of her children are made Wards of the Courts if they stay with her which they will providing she hasn't been implicated with Meehan on the porno stuff.
I know its hard being a single mum as I've been one. But childrens needs come before anyone elses.

They did say the pornographic images were not of Shannon or her siblings,not that it would have stayed that way if he had not been found out,I bet he would have got round to her eventually.

This has been a strange one from the off.

I know we should not judge, but the police would seem to be vindicated in their reason for not returning Shannon home.

But as a child, Shannon will only want to be with her mum...wee soul.

Gillie - I think you will find that he is the father of the youngest child if memory serves me correct.

I completely agree that the police knew exactly what they were doing!!

A friend asked me the other day what I thought and I told him it was just plain weird that she wasn't returned home...... I'm so proud of our Police force for keeping her away!!

Maybe her *abductor* was her *place of safety*, poor little mite, that she is.

*Maybe* he has been kept in custody to protect him from vigilante groups, cos the police feel he was trying to protect not hurt her.

Maybe he wanted to abuse her at some stage..

But it is only this 22 year old who has so far been actually accused of any crime involving indecency and children. I find it informative that the abductor so far hasn't been charged with anything other than abducting.

And you are absolutely right, Pink, I think the police have done exactly the right thing for this little girl.

What a pity that Shannon has had all this publicity with photos in the paper. It will be difficult for the poor lamb to get back to a normal life among her peers. Wherever she goes from now on she will be recognised.

What will this vile being get a slap on the wrist.If he stole a few thousand pounds from a bank he would be sent down for years.I think its about time we got our priorities right. Castrate them for starters,then release them into the hands of the public. The children whose lives they distroy are not given any consideration by them. They are low life and should be treated as such. A friend of mine use to castrate pigs on a farm she said she would do it for nothing

Two points.
Firstly, what happened about being innocent until proven guilty - are we not all setting ourselves up as judge, jury and executioner?
If he is guilty then let us hope he gets the punishment he deserves but until that happens let us not sway opinion - including that of potential jurors.
Secondly, is there not something wrong about a mother who has a relationship with a very young chap many years her junior? Instead of clamouring for the return of her daughter should we not be looking at those facts too?
