You do it at your peril, first you ask the tree owner if you can,

Then you remember not to put living relatives details,

You can't at least not on here.

The only way to do it automatically is to use a program such as FTM on your PC, which has merger facility. This will also require the other person to email you a gedcom of their tree for you to merge.

Why on earth would you want to C&P someone else's tree?
Copying causes more problems on here than just about anything else.
If you just copy you don't know if the information is correct & you certainly learn nothing about your ancestors.
Sorry but to C & P is just to name collect

Many of the people on this other persons tree will not be related to you. You might want to browse through it and pick and choose who should be added to your tree, do you really want their spouse's mums aunts seventh cousin?

Well I guess this is case proven, it's a bad idea to open up your tree to anyone!

Why do you want to do that without doing your own research, another tree could be full of mistakes ? Its like copying someone elses homework?

Building up a tree for yourself by adding entire trees belonging to others is somewhat pointless.

If someone has let you see their tree then the normal thing to do is to thank them and ask if they mind you copying relevant parts of their research.

While opening a tree tends to make us presume that someone is happy to share, it is possible for trees to be accidentally opened and it is polite to double check.

When using someone else's research you would be wise to use it only as a guide to your own research. There are many cases of sloppy trees online and of people deciding someone is an ancestor wrongly.

I made a contact with a really nice lady a few years ago who had spent years researching her tree. We exchanged information and her tree matched my ancestors........the problem was they weren't her ancestors!!! She had opted for the wrong one of two women of the same name.

It's OK to collect details of people who are unrelated or distantly related to you if you are doing a One Name Study or an area/village study or if you fancy looking at what happened to the descendants of one of your ancestral aunts and uncles perhaps, but you will probably really annoy someone if you are related to them but add all their spouse's ancestors to your tree.

Then the worst faux pas would be if you add any living individuals to your tree. If any contact has got details of their living relations on their GR tree do not under any circumstances add them to your own as that is against the rules on GR and is very inconsiderate.

Hi all.
Can I just say without upsetting anyone, a couple of weeks ago a very dear friend and contact emailed me to say she had added some stuff to her tree I might be interested in, so I took a look and sure enough there was a few names and dates I didn't have, so started adding them to my tree, then thought could I copy & paste to be quicker, but couldn't do it, so put a thread up on tips board asking how to, I got the biggest onslought about coping other peoples trees, I was so upset I still havn't added the names, so things arn't always what they seem. Can I just say I have given her as much info as she has given me.
