Aw, that's cute, Carol. My daughter had to sing that at primary school - she loved doing the "Oi!" bit!

Shame there's not much of the Lambeth Walk left to see now. I remember it how it was in "the old days" LOL, full of market stalls and a great little sweetshop on the corner!

Just noticed that with the Lula Bye Bye song, in our family we sang a variation on the 2nd verse -

So Lula lula lula lula bye bye
In your Mummy's arms you're weeping
Soon you will be sleeping
with a Lula lula lula lullaby.

Ah, I love that little song.

My Mum sang the same version as yours, and I sung it to my daughter, also about Lambeth Walk, my husband was born in Walnut tree walk and spent all his childhood down the walk, do you remember Ernie Noades! and the pie and mash shop! also husband mentions sweet shop think it was called Blackman's, all the stalls I emember one of my Aunt Rose's friends sold Veg from her stall, it was such a busy market, sad to say they are all now disappearing. East Lane is now full of African Food, not many of the old stalls remain.

Torchy, Torchy
Torchy, Torchy the little battery boy
I 'm a clever walking talking toy
With bright blue eyes and golden hair
I've a magic beam that can shine anywhere

Torchy, Torchy the little battery boy
Torchy, Torchy the battery boy
I 'm a walking talking toy
Press my switch see my bulb start to gleam
It's the most magic light you'll have seen
Torchy, Torchy

Carol - no I don't remember any actual shop names as I was just a nipper at the time but remember the hustle and bustle and noise - and as I was just a kid I tend to remember the shops that interested me the most - the sweet shop and the toy shop LOL!

My grt aunt used to take me down there a lot when I was a toddler (in the early 60s). Then we moved out of London and it wasn't till the late 1970s that we returned to London and I ended up living first in Tyers St, then later in Vauxhall Street! (both nr Lambeth Walk) - stayed there 28 yrs and only just moved away last year!

Through my research I discovered that half my ancestors lived in Tyers/Vauxhall Street right back to the early 1800s!!!!

My brother went to school in Walnut Tree Walk!

Just remembered a bit of another old lullaby that Gran used to sing. Do you know this one?

Oh, my baby
My curly-headed baby
Your daddy's in the cotton fields
working for your foo-ooood...

Can't remember any more of it, though.

I recall some but not all....

Did anyone sing that one

Autum days when the grass is dewy and the silk inside the chestnut tree
Jet planes waiting in the air to be refueld and to say a great big thank you
I mustnt forget....No I mustnt forget
to say a great big Thank you
I mustnt forget .......

My neices nephews and God children all think I am mad as they have never sung that one. It was my fav at school.

Little Old Lady
Abe Lyman
Music and Lyrics by Hoagy Carmichael and Adams

Little old lady passing by,
Catching everyone's eye,
You have such a charming manner,
Sweet and shy.
Little old bonnet set in place,
And a Smile on your face,
You're a perfect picture in your
Lavander and lace.
Little bit of business here,
Little bit of business there,
Bet that you've been window shopping
All around the square.
Little old lady, time for tea
Here's a kiss, two or three,
You're just like that little old lady,
I hold dear to me

The Umbrella Man
Kay Kyser

Toodle - luma luma
Toodle - luma luma
Toodle - oh lay
Any umbrellas, any umbrellas
To mend today?
Bring your parasol, it may be small. It may be big
He will fix them all on what you call a thing-a-ma-jig
Pitter patter patter! Pitter patter patter!
It looks like rain.
Let it pitter patter. Let it pitter patter.
Who cares for rain?
He'll mend your umbrellas, then go on his way
Singing toodle luma luma. Toodle luma luma.
Any umbrellas to mend today.
When there's a lull
And things are dull
He'll sharpen knives for all the wives
In the neighborhood
And he's very good.
He'll darn a sock
Or fix a clock
An apple cart
A broken heart --
He'll mend anything but he'd much rather sing -
Toodle - luma luma
Toodle - luma luma
Toodle-oh-lay
Any umbrellas - any umbrellas
To mend today?
He'll mend your umbrella
Then go on his way singing
Toodle luma luma
Toodle luma luma
Any umbrellas to mend today
