Bernard has been located in Aldershot (registered as Barney)with his wife Christina Bermingham, due to being a soldier-he then resided in Dublin-where Christina was from-I have the marriage lines, but I have been unable to locate his birth record-his father was John Vergis-
all the Vergis' in Dublin are his desendants-as are the ones in Kent-but can anyone suggest where else to look-I have yet to access the military records at Kew

Could this be her on the 1911 irish census?

Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language Marital Status Specified Illnesses Years Married Children Born Children Living
Vergis Christina 62 Female Head of Family Roman Catholic Dublin City Ireland Washer Government Laundry Cannot Read or write - Widow - 32 10 3

She's listed her 3 live children and it looks as tho Elizabeth the eldest child was born India?

Christina was illiteret-gosh so am I!! I have the census you refer to, one of the Irish census states e was born in Ireland, but the next doesnt give a birth place. He was in the British army-whch I am aware a lot of Irish soldiers were-but couldnt find any trace if him or any other vergis i the whole of Ireland beyond the marriage. There isnt too many in the UK either-Kareena

Yes thats her- I have that census as well- she died in the work house-poor women

WayneTracey Report 18 Jan 2010 00:23

I woldn't make the assumption they are all related tho!

You cannot possibly prove that..... someone's name may have migrated or been shortened to vergis!

Karena

It would have been better for you to have mentioned what exactly you do have by way of census data etc...saves us all alot of time!!

Do you have Elizabeth's Indian birth?

Tracey, those multiple names are purely Ancestry's ignorant nonsense.

Look at the image - I know what I'm going to see before I do. There are women identified as "wife" whose husband was not present. Ancestry attaches them to the nearest male head of household, and strips them (and their children) of their surname.

My gr-grfather had 2 wives in 1891 ...

Barney Vergis is called head of family.

Mary Smith's husband William is called Drummer, I think it is.
Jane Anne Sarson's husband is called Private.
So they have been called the wives of the "head", Barney Vergis.

There are probably a slew of women in this military "household" to whom this has been done. But at least in this instance their surnames have been left alone.

Although I am happy she has Elizabeth in India-there are no other records of Elizabeth-so I assume she died-I really do think I need to see if I can locate his military records

I checked at FIBIS and there were no records for Vergis in India.

Kareena Report 18 Jan 2010 00:31

Just to ad, on the 1911 census-Mary is their daughter- I cannot recall Jane on the list-a middle name maybe?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 18 Jan 2010 00:36

Have you got the 2 births of Christiana (Shorncliffe 1873 ) & Maria E (Aldershot 1870) ?

Are these also yours?

Janey-thanks for the site connection- I will do a bit of searching.

Tracey, as originally posted-I am only asking for advise on locating his origins at the moment. I didnt expect anyone to start searching and I apologise if I wasnt clear-thank you for your help though-
just being advised that other people can be lumped to someone else is a learning curve-thank you both Kareena

Could Vergis be a spelling that originated with Bernard? Since they would not have been literate, it could be how someone wrote the name down when they said it, for instance.

There are barely more than a dozen Vergis events in the GRO index for England - are they all related, including the marriages in Dewsbury 1869 and Burnley 1887?

Kareena

Kareena Report 18 Jan 2010 00:40

Tracey, can you advise me-are these Christinas children
"2 births of Christiana (Shorncliffe 1873 ) & Maria E (Aldershot 1870) ?"
or Vergis connections- I am unaware of these 2

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 18 Jan 2010 00:42

These 2 are listed on the military BMD.

Kareena, it's always a matter of the person asking having it all in their head, and (a) we don't know what's there, and (b) we don't know what it is!

Having fairly complete info can be useful for searching, and searching can sometimes find things -- e.g. a more detailed place of birth or a different DOB in a different census, that sort of thing. Knowing what you know -- whether you know something, and what it is -- is always the best way.

I do wonder about the spelling.

Doing a search of the IGI for all events in the British Isles, any time, for surname Vergis, exact spelling, comes up wtih a bunch of records in Surrey and London especially in the 1600s and that's it, nothing Irish.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 18 Jan 2010 00:45

Kareena,

The full listing is,....

Births , GRO REGIMENTAL BIRTH INDICES (1761 to 1924) 1761 - 1924

Vergis Christiana, Shorncliffe, 1873, 9th Regt, 859 29
Maria E, Aldershot, 1870, 9th Regt, 859 29

Kareena Report 18 Jan 2010 00:46

Janey- I think you are right with regarding the spelling- if he was English-then an Irish man may not get the accent-just like the Barney on the Aldershot census

Tracey- I will have to look at the military BMD as that is something I have not seen.
I am going to sign off now and look at the Indian site- thank you both for your help.
