Bernard has been located in Aldershot (registered as Barney)with his wife Christina Bermingham, due to being a soldier-he then resided in Dublin-where Christina was from-I have the marriage lines, but I have been unable to locate his birth record-his father was John Vergis- |

Christina was illiteret-gosh so am I!! I have the census you refer to, one of the Irish census states e was born in Ireland, but the next doesnt give a birth place. He was in the British army-whch I am aware a lot of Irish soldiers were-but couldnt find any trace if him or any other vergis i the whole of Ireland beyond the marriage. There isnt too many in the UK either-Kareena |

Tracey, those multiple names are purely Ancestry's ignorant nonsense. |

Although I am happy she has Elizabeth in India-there are no other records of Elizabeth-so I assume she died-I really do think I need to see if I can locate his military records |

I checked at FIBIS and there were no records for Vergis in India. |

Tracey, Sorry- this is my first request- I have been to Dublin and I have every birth certificate and census all the Vergis-are Christinas children- Emilia/Emily her 2nd daughter had a child out of wedlock-the 2 remaining sons of Christina moved to England and I have their details- it is the going upwards snd sidewards that I hav halted at. |

Have you got the 2 births of Christiana (Shorncliffe 1873 ) & Maria E (Aldershot 1870) ? |

Could Vergis be a spelling that originated with Bernard? Since they would not have been literate, it could be how someone wrote the name down when they said it, for instance. |

Kareena, it's always a matter of the person asking having it all in their head, and (a) we don't know what's there, and (b) we don't know what it is! |

Janey- I think you are right with regarding the spelling- if he was English-then an Irish man may not get the accent-just like the Barney on the Aldershot census |
