Hi Yvonne

No sign of Leslie McKenna in the later US censuses.

Re John Gaffney, any idea when he was born? There are 22 John Gaffneys living in New York born Ireland in the 1910 census - his age/year of birth might help.

Jacqui

The census entry for 1880, Chicago, Cook, Illinois reads

John Ashworth, Head, Age 33, Machinist, born England
Mary, Wife, Age 33, Keeping House, born England
Mary A, Daughter, Age 6, born Illinois
Arthur, Son, Age 4, born Illinois
Leigh, Son, Age 2, born England

You'll need to confirm this is the right family before going anywhere else, and the best way to do that is to get hold of Arthur's marriage certificate to Sarah which should give you his father's name. Then you'll need to track down his American birth certificate, when I was tracing my husband's grandfather's birth in Chicago, I used http://www.chicagogenealogy.com/ who will do look ups in the Chicago births marriges and deaths for a reasonable price - the lady who did my lookups was very quick in her response to my query.

I notice from the 1901 census that he was a British Subject, so he may not have an American birth certificate, you may have to look him up in the GRO section for births abroad - I think www.findmypast.com has them in one of their databases, yes British Overseas Births 1761 - 1994 - I think you need to buy credits for a lookup there.

good luck, hope you find him

Hi,

I Hope you can help and i hope you are recovering well!!

I have been looking for a James Kenny who was born in 1860 in Ireland, possibly Tullow? I think i have found him on a passenger list for the SS England on April 30th 1878 aged 18 which docked in New York. The family believes he actually stayed in New York as he is believed to have died in New York in 1933. We have no idea if he had a family etc. It would be great if you can have a look and see if you can find any info on him or any family.

Thanks for your time!
Louella

Hi Louella

Couldn't find anything in the 1880 census, which would be the first one to try, 1890, mostly destroyed by fire, but in 1900, think this may well be him

Manhattan, New York, New York

James Kenny, Head, Widower, Age 38, born July 1861, born Ireland, emigrated 1878, 21 years in country, naturalised, occupation Day Labourer
Charles, Kenny, Son, 13, born Jun 1886 New York, At School
Francis Kenny, Son, 11, born Feb 1889, New York, At School
Joseph Kenny, Son, 9 born Mar 1891, New York, At School
Maggie Kenny, Daughter, 7 born Mar 1893 New York
Rosa Brady, Housekeeper, Widow, Age 48, born Ireland, emigrated 1865

No luck in 1910 or afterwards I'm afraid.

Thanks Carol for taking the time, its much appreciated! Only thing that is a bit dubious about it is the birth date as i was sure it was 1860 not 1861. He was one of a set of twins so if i can find either of their birth certificates or the other twins UK census info as he moved to England from Ireland i should be able to see if they match up at all but it is a step in the right direction.

Thank you for your help, hope you feel better!!
Louella.

Hope you're feeling better. I know this might be a little cheeky so if it's too much it's OK!
My ancestor, Rachel Entwistle states on census in England that she was born c 1856 in FRANKFORD USA. Father Thomas - mother Jemima. Problem is I've found a few Frankfords in the USA and not too sure which one it is. Mother Jemima was born n Knutsford c 1821. Father Thomas I can't find in any UK census so presume he died in US.
MAny thanks

Hello Carol,
What a generous offer from you!
I have found some of my ROW family in Massachusetts - they emigrated from England around 1870 - 1880 and settled first in Cambridge Mass.

I am wondering if you could look for ISAAC ROW. b.1840 Plymouth U. K. may have emigrated around 1860 - that's when I lose him in U. K.

Also ELIZABETH ROW b. 1856 PLYMOUTH U.K.
I have found her in 1920 Census living with her nephew - another ISAAC b. 1868 Plymouth U>K>

I know it's a lot toask but I long to know anything about them.

Many thanks and hope you will soon be recovered

Regards - Joy Stringer (Norfolk U.K.)

Hi Carol,
I hope you are starting to feel a bit better now.
I have an American request for you please:-
Samuel James Hurt (shown as Hart on 1881 census) born in Marylebone, Middlesex and his wife Minnie. On the 1881 census they had 2 daughters, Sarah and Minnie. Someone on GR found all the names on a New York passenger list after 1881, but did not have full access to give me further information.
I would really love to find them on any census after 1881.
Many Thanks,
Susan
P.S. Have to go to work soon, but will check back later this afternoon.

Hi Carol, looking for any information on my Great Grandfather Christopher Carlyle Daniels born 1861 Puget/Pughet Sound, Washington, USA. Fathers name James Daniels - a wine merchant, Mothers name Rose St. Clare. Came out to Australia (don't have the date or the name of the ship) and changed name to Daniel (no "s" )and married on 13/5/1889 in Hughenden Qld to Jessie Hucker. His age on marriage cert was 28 and his occupation was a pastrycook. They had three children - Sidney St. Clair Daniel, Joseph Henry Daniel and Mary Kathleen Daniel known as Jessie). Great Aunty Jessie always said that her father was a "Canadian Jew" and that he was a cook that travelled around to different places cooking for shearers before getting a restaurant. He died in 1930 at Parramatta N.S.W. That's all the information I have on him. Any information on him would be appreciated. Thanks Helen Brisbane Australia
