Hi Tracy Have you tried all spellings of that name? My Learys became Oleary O'Leary and Learey on various census data. Some sites will use variants of names and others stick strictly to what you put in the search. One of mine whose name was Hinves turned out to be Hewitson in 1901 which stretches the imagination. I'm reliably informed that the transcribing was done in Sri Lanka and there are some very bad translations.

Hi Tracey, Just a thought that may help, after having some success myself with them only over the weekend. As you know Wentzell is one name of my family tree and have been trying to find them but with not much luck like yourself with your rellies. We had not found Andrew b 1812 on any census, but we knew that he was a Publican as well as being a Boat / Barge Builder in Lambeth..... Directories, ... It was my first time of using them, looking under both the commercial section and the publican section we found that he was listed in both from 1841 upto 1872. You may obviously have already checked these out, the Directories, the tradesman of Blacksmith in your line, he may well be listed. Hope the info's useful, Happy Hunting, Regards J.C

Sorry all for not replying, I had missed this thread and silly me for not checking it Right - Yes some of my O'Leary was in the army & navy. I don't know much about it as my great uncle cant remember much to what regiment and who it was. As for 1881 listing.. That *might* be a possible, thank you I will follow that up, will email my great uncle about it and see what he thinks. Variants of O'Leary surname - I have tried everything i.e first name only with place of birth, just the surname etc. No avail! John, you know how I feel now with them elusive rellies, which is why I searched for yours in a break from banging head against that brick wall! Elizabeth & William wouldn't be in Scotland because Elizabeth was disowned by her parents for marrying a poor man, as the Hardys was a well do family. But will check it out.. INCASE they did anyways. Ireland.. Well again another possibly, but no access to 1901 there! Once again for you people who have replied, thank you SO much for helping and trying! Regards, T xx

Tracey, I take it that you have searched the Directories under Blacksmiths then, ..... I'll check it out anyway on my next trip to London, ..... hopefully within the next month or so, I cannot do it any earlier as I live in Leicester ... OR if there is a nice person out there, who is able to check the London Directories out B4 me, beating me to it. ....Just have to see if there were any listed. If it were not for your find of the 1871 Census of my rellies, .... I was about ready to throw in the towel. Patience we think we have, but at times when the brick wall is all you see in front, you, me and all of us who are hit by them are tested to the limits .... eventually YOU WILL FIND THEM, it just takes time, patience, ... loads of patience, ..... and with the help of all who so kindly help us on GR, Many Thanks to you all. Take care, Regards J.C
