G/day to you all, can anyone help me out again please. i need info on a policeman his name was George Rushby b1850, he married Elizabeth Marlow 18 Aug 1872 in the parish church Cobham, Surrey. on the certificate which is'nt a very good one it says he was a Police Constable but it does not say where he was born. So is there any way of finding out where he came from. He is not with Elizabeth and children in the 1881 to 1901 census, in 1901 Elizabeth is listed as being a widow. Hope someone can help. Thank you Tim in Oz |

Hi Tim, There are two for the year 1850,of that name, George Rushby, Registered March , District,Louth-Lincolnshire. GRO Indexes,(for cert ordering)Volume 14=Page543, George Rushby, Registered,March, District,Gainsborough-Lincolnshire, GRO Indexes-Volume 14-Page 357, The name Rushby is very common in that area, Perhaps 1871 census may help, Have you tried going down the Police Archives direction? Kay. |

The 1881 image shows a George RUSHBY, 30 a married Police Constable born Sturton, Lincolnshire at the home of Elizabeth PAINE a 65 years old widow. He is not with any other family and is shown as her grandson. They are living at 43 Petre Street, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield. Do you have George's marriage certificate, which hopefully would show his father's name? I couldn't identify George on the 1871 census. |

Christine That George looked the most likely out of the ones listed, I thought. I don't know Lincolnshire place names to know whether this 1871 George and the one I found in 1881 could be the same person. |

Gwyneth Looking at map the 2 places are miles apart, so looks like it's back to the hunt again. I thought he might have joined the constabulary after leaving the military - there I go, jumping to conclusions again! UPDATE: Can't be him - on 1861 there are 2 George Rushby born 1850 in Furstow and Sturton |

Just what I was thinking too! Who is the wife of the George in Sheffield, 1881, I wonder? |

In 1891 his wife is Lucy, he's a private detective, living in Sheffield. No children. 1901, in Sheffield, still with Lucy. Now he's an Steel and Iron Works Detective |

Found her in 1901, widow, with son Thomas a house painter, still in Cobham, but agree that family is elusive in 1891. |

G'Day Timothy! Re: police records. The National Archives, which has the Met Police records, says: 'Records of other police forces, except the Royal Irish Constabulary, are not public records. Those which survive are held either by the appropriate local record office or the force itself.' For info on the Royal Artillery, I suggest you try googling, but I doubt if the personal info will be online. nell |
