Is it a bird? is it a plane? Report 6 Feb 2006 19:49

I am doing a search of the above parish for someone and thought I'd offer to do lookups for the same parish (as its so large!). Tynemouth did cover North Shields until about 1860. So post your lookup requests below!

Hi I would be very grateful if you could find any information for me, to tie in with any of the following I have a marriage at South Shields 1814 between Matthew English and Margaret Merrin. They apparently moved to North Shields and May have had the following children Isabella Merrin English christened November 1819 Christ Church Andrew Merrin English December 1815 William English September 1817 Margaret English June 1822 Mary Ann English December 1832 My great grandmother was Mary Ann English born 1835?? Isabella married a John Brown and I can find no further trace of them. also can find no trace of Andrew and William either.wondering if they died young It is even more complicated as I have a record of a birth at Tynemouth for a Isabella Merrin English born 24th April 1855 christened May 1855 parents Mary Ann and Matthew English this cannot be the same Matthew but they must be connected due to the middle name Merrin. I realise I am asking a lot but any information would be helpful,as I am at a dead end now, and although a native of North Shields I now live in Scotland thanks Judith

Thanks very much for looking these up , the first marriage is the one as I actually have the original certificate for it. I expect the others could be related so I will keep a note of them in case I can find any connection at all. I forgot to mention in my previous message that the Isabella Merrin English born 1855 was orphaned and taken to a St James and St Paul Orphan House in Gloucestershire and after that I cannot trace her

Dorothy - I will check the Tynemouth Christchurch records for a baptism but North Shields had their own church by 1890 so I may not find him. I'm just concentrating on the one church for the moment as it is a very very very busy church which means it takes a while to search for single names.

Hi Sarah Thank you for your kind offer. Would you be able to check please for the marriage of my 3xGreat Grandparents George OLIVER and Rosanna DAGLISH who married at Christ Church on 17 March 1832? I would be interested in knowing if they signed their names or made a mark. Thank you very much. Kind regards and God bless you, Lynne x New Zealand

Hi Darth That's very generous of you I'd be very grateful if you could see if you can find a baptism for Sarah Brown, daughter of Robert and Ann Brown, in North Shields in 1836-37. She is on the 1851 census age 14 - all her younger siblings show as born Bishopwearmouth, but she, the eldest is North Shields. Many thanks David

Ok I've been in to the library today and I've started doing some of the lookups. I am ONLY doing Christchurch at Tynemouth for the moment. If you want any other parish you will have to wait until I do my next general set of lookups in a few weeks time I'm afraid! Today I've done the baptisms 1805 to 1815. Up until the end of 1812 they have lots of information in them but after 1812 they are fairly basic. Maid Marian - No Stebbins, Stebbens, Stibbins yet

David in France - Not got far enough through the baptism records to reach Sarah yet. Did her dad come from North Shields/Tynemouth? There are several Robert Brown's being baptised during the time period I was looking at. Have you any information about Robert?

Hi Darth Many thanks for the information, I will now have to try and see what I can make of these, the Andrew Merrin is definitely one of mine I notice you mention the library does that mean that local records are available at North Shilelds library? I have also been trying to find out where records for Hauxley Amble and Warkworth are held, but apparently the main records office is closed Thanks again judith

Yes the records office is closed so a lot of the parish records are in Morpeth library at the moment. As I live so close to the library I'm offering to do lookups there. Look out for my next Northumberland lookups topic when I put one up (at this rate it'll probably be sometime in March at the earliest) and put your Warkworth and Amble lookups on there. best wishes Sarah

Am about to go and do some more lookups so look out for my next post tonight :) UPDATE - It seems I needed to book tonight (it's usually quiet on a Wednesday night!). Nevermind I have booked for a space on Friday (library isn't open tomorrow night) so fingers crossed I'll find some bits and pieces then.
