Subsequent to your msg last night remoans etc I thought I'd ask your advice on this as I don't think you'll be offended by my inexperience. Challenge 1 - how to find marriage cert for a William Wright (millions of those about I know) bn 1878 Dover to a Gertrude Lodder bn 1888 Wellingborough then moved to B'ham area. They could have married anywhere but I presume? it would be in her parish of Aston, Birmingham. I have searched the igi and Ancestry to find Gertrude with no rellies on the igi and no marriage on Anc. I have searched for William Wright on the Ancestry BMD to find at least 20 up to 1910 for either Dover and B'ham areas and nothing thereafter. I know they married some date between 1901 (as census states william living with parents still at this point) and 1916 which is when my Grandfather Ralph was born in Dover. Challenge 2 - How to find my mothers half brother who may not even know of our existence. John Parker bn1927 around the south London area was known as 'Nobby' and lied to get into the Navy. He served on the Ark Royal when she sank in 1939ish off gibralter. Post 1939 you have to be next of kin (which I'm not) to get the naval records. I have searched the Commonwealth war graves, put adverts on HMS Ark Royals homepage, adverts on Navy News. He could be married, dead and anywhere in the country - with or without a family. I'm beginning to realise how nice it is to have an unusual surname now - if I know my luck though, I'll find a Smith too!? Unlike some I just want to know the right questions/places to ask/go to get the info I need. signed a green newbie xx

Blimey babe !!! I'll just re do it ! Unlike some I just want to know the right questions/places to ask/go to get the info I need. signed a green newbie xx ------------------------------------- Having read through the first challenge: Try FreeBMD, putting BOTH name's in. Use the last know date whilst single as the start date as the search and just search a 10 year period to start with. FreeBMD only goes upto about 1911. http://freebmd.rootsweb(.)com/cgi/search.pl ..remove () After 1911 upto 1920 you could use FamilyRelatives - but thats a Payable site .... I have credit with that site, so if they didn't marry before 1911 I'll check upto 1920 for you. I'll read your 2nd challenge ! I have to admit, I can't really advice you on this one, as I don't know how to ! The only thing I can suggest is that you ask for a lookup on the 2003/4 or 5 Electoral Register and HOPE that something jumps out for you. I really think you should throw Challenge 2 over to all members !!! I don't mind admitting defeat with this particular question ! The first one won't beat us ... if they definately married, one of us will find them ! Elaine ;-)

Fiona Report 27 Feb 2006 21:38

Di Dianna, Do you think it is the right marriage then?? Only Husband is John not William!!! No secret, I went with Gertrude's name on FreeBMD as I thought her the least common.

Sorry misread - doh! Hubby was William according to my Dad, but could this of been a second name that he used as his first? I too looked up BMD using Gertrudes name as less common but came up blank? I will send for this certificate though Thanks. Elaine - could you look up on the other site - and you were right - You're all LOVELY Have put challenge 2 up for general consumption. As an aside - do GR members have an annual physical get together?

Fiona Report 27 Feb 2006 21:52

Hi Dianna, Do you not have a copy of your grandfather Ralphs birth certificate? His fathers full name would be on that. If Ralph's father was John and not William any census info you have on him may be wrong.

Fiona

Fiona Report 27 Feb 2006 22:01

Birth for Ralph Wright. He was born in Aston not Dover. Wright, Ralph. Dec 1916, Registration District, Aston. Vol, 6d. Page , 729. Mothers maiden name, Lodder. My dad isn't too good with names, places and dates either..........my dad gave me g grandmothers sister as Pattie Titley..........name only turned out to be MARTHA JONES!!!

I'm stunned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have no family papers at this time - Mum and Dad live on a narrowboat and need access to their house (currently rented) to get what little family papers we have. It seems my Grandmother - Ralphs wife (Emily Evelyn Violet Rogers bn 17 June 1918 Dover) burned alot of the papers. Does the Ralph you've found have a brother Philip listed? he died aged 19? apparently in Dover but again have found nothing in the BMD as post 1910.

Doesnt matter if you dont have the certificates now, you can buy copies for £7 online.

Dianna, Was Philip older or younger than Ralph? Do you know roughly when he was born? I'll have a look for him.

Many N's Report 27 Feb 2006 22:40

Sorry - I have no other info other than Philip (could be Phillip) with a possible middle name of Cranfield bn unknown at possibly Dover. But I'm beginning to doubt everything Dad's told me. Sorry to be so vague

Hi Dianna, seen your other message, and again your getting loads of help x I CAN look on the FamilyRelatives site if you doubt FC's find ... she did find a Gertrude L Lodder .... .... and with you not KNOWING what the hubby;'s name was for sure, then maybe FC's marriage is THE one ?? My Mother married a William (Bill as we knew him) .......... but when I double checked he was actually Richard..... so yes, it is possible for folks to be known by a name other than there real one .... If you want me to check FamilyRelatives I will do ...... it wouldn't hurt ! Elaine ;-)
