Mhairi Queen of Scots Report 28 Mar 2006 00:21

Hey If John was married in 1842 then he might not have been at home with his parents in the 1851 but living with his own family so the entry Georgina found may be correct. As its been mentioned by Penny - if his occupation is mentioned on the marriage cert then it may help you to find Joseph on the census's. Hope you find them Mhairi

Thanks Penny, JOSEPH was a labourer on the certificate. I am almost certain He would have been a farm labourer. Brian.

Hi Brian As Ian has said, the first step would be to look at the parish registers for John's birth. This will tell you who his parents were. You would then be able to see if the names coincide with those given here from the IGI and the censuses. The PR's would also give the names of any of John's siblings that may have been Christened in Shute too. There may also be a chance that John's parents married in the same parish. If they did, you would then have John's mother's maiden name too. The Parish Records would be held in the Records Office nearest to the parish of Shute, or the Devon County Records Office. If you are unable to get to the RO, you could either ask on this board if anyone is going and willing to do a look up for you, or you could ring the RO yourself and ask about their rates for searching the PR's and take it from there.
