I have a copy of my grand mothers (Gertrude) marriage certificate in 1903, that says my ggrandfather was Francis Fletcher, his occupation is listed as a cord warmer. I have found a family on familysearch.org for the 1881 census listing Francis aged 36 as a shoemaker and Gertrude as 1 year old, this Gertrude would be the right age. Would somebody please mind looking in the 1891 and 1901 census for me, to see what Francis`s occupations were then. Gertrude may not be with them in 1901 as she was listed as a domestic servant on marriage cert. Also, what was a cord warmer? Sylvia

Sylvia I think the word is cordwainer which would be a shoemaker. Marilyn

cord wainer Shoemaker. Originally, a leather worker using high quality Cordovan leather from Spain for such things as harness, gloves and riding boots. By the 19c it had reduced to a shoemaker - as distinct from a cobbler, who repaired shoes Linda

You need to say where they were born and where they were living, so they can be found on the other censuses Linda

Gertrude is listed at Whittiker road on marriage cert so that must have been where she was a domestic

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 25 Apr 2006 14:54

The 1861 image is hard to read, but the one mistranscibed as Francelia is age 70 and the head of the house, his wife Elizabeth is only 50. He must be the Francis of the 1851 census. So you have this branch of your family back to 1841 now, that should give you a good start. glad to help Linda
