Legal adoptions didn't come into being until the 1920's. There is this marriage on Tees Valley Indexes:- Annie E. Thomas to Thomas W. Colmer in 1887 in Stockton on Tees. The reference is Sept. qtr. 1887, Stockton, 10a 138 Kath. x
