Legal adoptions didn't come into being until the 1920's. Before that people just took in each others kids and brought them up as their own. ps - Living next door at number 47 are: John Colmer M 27 Labourer in Iron Works born Stockton Ellen Colmer Wife 21 born Jarrow Thomas Colmer Son 1 born Middlesbrough Dianne xx |

Adoptions weren't registered until 1927, so I don't think it would be an official adoption. Often members of the family or neighbours would take in a child. My own aunt was brought up by neighbours when my grandmother died when my aunt was just 6 weeks old. This was after 1927, but all she has is a letter signed by her father and the neighbour saying they both agreed to the arrangement. Kath. x |

The marriage took place during WW! so Richard could have been born anywhere. Not sure what the legal age for marriage was at this time. Maureen |

No, the marriage certificate won't tell you where he was born, but will hopefully give you his father's name and you can then look for the family in the 1901 census. Kath. x |

Sorry I don't know how to copy and paste but I looked up Colmer, Yorkshire in 1901. There were 15 of them. I found this info 45 Queen Mary Street Middlesbrough Annie E Colmer M 28 born Stockton Durham Richard Garvey 5 Adopted Son born Middlesbrough Yorkshire Annie is described as married, but there's no husband in the household. I'd like to bet that this is your Richard. Maybe (or maybe not) he changed his name officially to Colmer later than 1901. Just a thought. Dianne xx |

The marriage certificate that Maureen has found for you should give you his father's name and occupation, and you might be lucky and find siblings as witnesses. With his father's name you can check the 1901 census again. Kath. x |

Where are you getting the year of birth from? I've checked on Ancestry and there is no Richard Colmer born 1895 anywhere, and no birth on the Tees Valley Indexes for that year. Kath. x |
