ArgyllGran Report 4 Apr 2026 20:53

In 1911, Robert and Mary Ann were in Inverbervie with children Robert 7; Helen H 1; Maggie 5; Rachel 4; David L 2;.

In 1921, they were in Inverbervie, with children David 12, Helen11, Rachel 14, Robert 17, Annie 7, Lizzie 4, Maggie 15, William 2, James 0.

From an age point of view, it seems much more likely that one of those sons was the father of Ruth and Robert Burns - but without the birth certs, there's no way of knowing.

That makes much more sense…………….

Thankyou ArgyllGran

I will get the certificate then I will be able to use everything you and everyone else as posted to work it all out.

:-)

ArgyllGran Report 4 Apr 2026 21:22

Marriages of the Fotheringham/Legg sons:

David Legg Fotheringham married Caroline E Rettie in 1935.

Robert Balneave Fotheringham (junior) married Isabella Mary S Thomson in 1937.

James Legg Fotheringham married Janet Roberta Richardson in 1946.

William Edward Fotheringham (born1919) married late in life, to Elizabeth Mary MacQueen (nee Kindness) in 1972.
She had previously been married to Hugh George MacQueen in 1955.

Going by the dates, David is therefore likely to be Ruth and Robert B's father -
BUT
only the birth certs will prove or disprove.

AG- What is the address for Robert and Mary Ann on the 1911 Census in Inverbervie please ?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 4 Apr 2026 22:31

Sorry, I would have to spend credits to see that, as the Scottish 1911 census is only on SP, and not on Ancestry or other sites..

You can look it up for yourself.
Register (free) with SP.
Click "Search the records".
Click "Census" and choose 1911.
Enter the name of one of the family, with age (as in my post at 20:53), and Inverbervie (in Kincardineshire) as location.
Click "Buy credits" beside the entry you want.

The minimum is 30 credits for £7.50, and you'll use 6 credits to view and/or print the census record.

WWI, Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923

Address on Pension Card given - DAVID STREET, BERVIE

Robert has 2 service numbers during the War.

Pte 8115 Fotheringham King's Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) entered the war in France/Belgium 19th Jan 1915.
He later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and was renumbered 16903.

National Archives Machine Gun Corps records are down at the moment, so I can't tell you more.

Placed on Army Reserve (Class Z) 21st March 1919. Soldiers were returned to civilian life after the war, but placed in the Reserves in case there was a resurrection of hostilites etc. Class Z means he was claiming for a disability, but this would not preclude him from being recalled, if necessary.

I don't know what his disability was.

The three medals referred to by ArgyllGran were the Victory Medal, British War Medal (as posted) and in Roberts case the 1914/1915 Star. ( as opposed to the 1914 Star)

No record on SP of a marriage for Robert Burns Fotheringham

Did he marry in Lancashire in 1956?

ADDED......looks like he did, in view of the following

FOTHERINGHAM, ROBERT BURNS 1935
GRO Reference: DOR Q3/2022 in LANCASHIRE (591-1D) Entry Number 524179787

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 5 Apr 2026 12:23

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Apr 2026 13:22

I know it well - got stuck many a time at the level crossing!!

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 5 Apr 2026 13:52

Robert Burns daughter has just got back to me at said her grandfather was just called Andrew Fotheringham?? and his wife was Mary Clarke.

Sorry to everyone that has helped on this thread so far. No wonder I have struggled to research when given wrong names. She is looking for what information she has she doesn't think she has his birth certificate anymore.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Apr 2026 14:07

OK - so everything we've found up to this point Is useless.

Start again -

Marriage:
FOTHERINGHAM, ANDREW
CLARK, MARY
1934
282 / 1 / 249
St Mary and St Peter

In that case, you need the marriage cert, to see his parents' names.
There are/were lots of Andrew Fotheringhams.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Apr 2026 14:11

NO record on SP of a marriage for Andrew Fotheringham to anyone named Clarke.

You can easily look yourself, of course.

BUT..................when SP re-opens for certificate ordering, get the birth cert and save all the speculation

OR...get the man's marriage cert from the GRO for (hopefully) accurate info about his father

ADDED..........
???????????

FOTHERINGHAM
ANDREW
CLARK
MARY
1934
282 / 1 / 249
St Mary and St Peter.............DUNDEE!!!!!!!

You can view the image if you buy some credits on SP. Cheaper and quicker than ordering a cert
